CD Projekt Red announces Cyberpunk 2077 'live-action project' in the works

The live-action project will tell an all-new story set in Cyberpunk 2077’s futuristic Night City.

CD Projekt Red is officially working on a live-action project set in Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City. The games publisher announced that it has partnered up with the production company Anonymous Content to turn the action-RPG into a live-action project - though it hasn’t clarified whether the project will take a movie or TV series format.

Few details have been revealed about the project besides the fact that, much like Netflix’s Cyberpunk Edgerunners, it will feature a brand new story separate from the events of the game. While the project currently doesn’t have writers or directors attached, Anonymous Content is said to be working, “in close collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team,” to bring the adaptation to life. The company has also, “commenced searching for a screenwriter.”

Anonymous Content is responsible for bringing various movies and TV series into reality, such as Mr. Robot, Schitt’s Creek, True Detective and The Revenant. This isn’t the only game adaptation it has in the works, either. The company became attached to a Life is Strange TV adaptation for Hulu in 2021, though the project seems to have fallen off the radar since.

While Cyberpunk 2077 might have gotten off to a rocky start, it’s clear that all the time CD Projekt Red spent on improving it has paid off in multitudes. Its first and last expansion Phantom Liberty seems to be well-received across the board, but its recent 2.0 update really hammered home just how far the base game has come. Cyberpunk Edgerunners also did a lot of work to generate public interest in the game worldwide thanks to a successful run on Netflix, and it’s clear evidence that Night City is big enough to contain many more stories that don’t involve V and Johnny Silverhand.

That being said, CD Projekt Red is already working on new Witcher games and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, so it probably won’t be too hands-on with this live-action project. The publisher also announced this week that the game has officially sold more than 25 million copies worldwide.
