Electronic Arts reveals 'authentic' Black Panther game from new studio

Electronic Arts now has three big Marvel games in development featuring Iron Man, Captain America and Black Panther.

Electronic Arts and Marvel Games have officially announced a single player Black Panther game in development at newly-formed studio Cliffhanger Games. The studio’s existence was revealed alongside this announcement, consisting of a team led by former Monolith Productions (Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor) boss Kevin Stephens.

EA’s Black Panther game has been rumoured to be in development since July last year, suggesting that the publisher is confident enough in its progress to begin recruiting for the project. Sure enough, EA’s official post announcing both the game and its studio Cliffhanger Games ends with an invitation for interested developers to join their team.

In the post, EA says that the untitled Marvel game will feature, “an expansive and reactive world that empowers players to experience what it is like to take on the mantle of Wakanda’s protector, the Black Panther.” The game will be a third-person single player game unconnected to other Marvel games like the recent Marvel’s Avengers, which also featured the Wakandan superhero.

Cliffhanger’s studio head Kevin Stephens said of the game:

We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game. Wakanda is a rich Super Hero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.

EA confirmed that the game is still, “early in development,” at Cliffhanger Games, which houses veteran developers who have worked on games like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Halo Infinite, God of War, Call of Duty and more. Don’t expect to see the game for quite a few more years, as it looks like the studio is still building out its development team.

EA and Marvel Games have a few more Marvel projects in development, and Black Panther happens to be in two of them. Alongside this untitled game, Black Panther and Captain America will also star in a World War 2-set game created by former Uncharted director Amy Hennig and Skydance New Media. The Dead Space Remake developers at Motive Studio are also working on a single player Iron Man game.
