Diablo 4 is already enjoying immense success in its first week of release alone.
Blizzard Entertainment has announced that Diablo 4 has already become its fastest-selling game of all time. The game launched on June 1 in early access and has already been played for 93 million hours worldwide, achieving Blizzard’s highest pre-order unit sales on both console and PC ever.
It’s worth noting that the game hasn’t even been out for a full week yet, which goes to show how successful it has proven to be for Blizzard. The company plans to continue supporting Diablo 4 in the long run with at least two confirmed expansions and more seasons of content that add cosmetics, gameplay changes and story content to the game. The game’s first season will only launch later this month with a dedicated battle pass.
On the game’s success, Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson said:
This is a moment years in the making for the Diablo IV team. We’re extremely proud to offer players the richest story ever told in a Diablo game. Players have a range of choices, including personal character customization, equipping personalized skills for battling horrific demons, or collecting Legendary loot to support your playstyle while discovering new ones. Since the game was first announced in 2019, the support from millions of players around the world drove us toward this release of our dark vision of Sanctuary. Hail Lilith, Blessed Mother.
He’s pretty dedicated to the bit. Blizzard Entertainment’s president Mike Ybarra also said in a statement:
Our vision at Blizzard is to create legendary experiences for all to share, and Diablo IV is an incredible realization of that vision. With highly customizable gameplay, gripping storytelling, and plenty of options around how to engage with the world, this masterfully crafted expression of the Diablo universe is an outstanding example of what our talented development teams are capable of. Whether you’re a veteran of the series or diving into Sanctuary for the first time, we welcome players to the global launch of Diablo IV.
After Blizzard’s many controversies and rocky game launches over the last few years, Diablo 4 is clearly a big win for the company. The game takes place 50 years after the events of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, when the summoning of Lilith, the Daughter of Hatred brings about a terrible conflict in Sanctuary. Lilith wants to reclaim the planet she created while Inarius and the forces of heaven wish to stop her, and players will be stuck in the middle of a brewing war.
