Apple’s expensive new mixed reality headset was revealed today at WWDC 2023.
Apple officially revealed its long-rumoured mixed-reality headset during its WWDC 2023 presentation today, and it costs a hefty $3,500. One can immediately see why: this is Apple’s new big-ticket item with a robust featureset, even if it seems to appeal to a more niche customer base than your standard iPhone user.
Here’s the eerily Black Mirror-esque announcement video:
Despite what its name suggests, the Vision Pro isn’t an upgraded version of an existing product - it’s the first and only mixed-reality headset Apple plans to launch this year. The device sports a micro-OLED display with 23 million pixels (more than 4K per eye), allowing users access to virtual 4K screens - though it costs quite a bit more than a standard 4K display. You’ll be able to control the headset using just your hands and eyes without the use of controllers, and use your voice to issue control commands.
The device can simulate virtual reality by blocking out your surroundings via an adjustable visual knob, but it can also detect anyone who approaches you automatically and display them to you. On the exterior, a curved OLED screen projects your eyeballs - and stay with me here - to outsiders with the correct perspective. To be clear, anyone who sees you while you have the headset on won’t see your actual eyes. They will see this abomination instead:
There’s some work to be done there, to be sure. Apple has also designed a whole new operating system for the Vision Pro, allowing its owners to use apps, take photos and watch movies in augmented reality - as if your computer screen was one large theater screen floating in front of you. You can even take pictures and videos on a much larger scale than on Apple’s other mobile products, and view them in full blown-out glory using the headset.
Apple noted that the headset will be able to provide entertainment besides movies and TV shows. While it might not be as gaming-forward as the Meta Quest or PSVR2 is, you will be able to play Apple Arcade games on a much wider format than usual. Unfortunately, the device has a two hour-long battery life, so don’t expect long gaming sessions on this thing. It's also connected by a cable, so quick movements probably won’t work either.
The Vision Pro will launch sometime next year in the U.S. for $3499, but Apple hasn’t provided a firm release date for the device yet. The Vision Pro will also be released in other countries later in 2024.
