Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s new trailer features Merrin and Greez, along with a High Republic Jedi who really shouldn’t be alive.
Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment’s new story trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor answers the only question we’ve had since its reveal: Is Merrin back? Thankfully, she is, along with Greez Ditzus and more members of the Mantis crew from the first game. Star Wars fans will also notice plenty of familiar faces and scenery, ranging from planets like Coruscant to The High Republic references.
Watch the trailer below:
This trailer gives fans a lot to chew on, even if it doesn’t necessarily give away much about the plot of the game. First off, Cere, Greez and the Nightsister Merrin from the first game will return over the course of this campaign - though they might not all board the Mantis with Cal this time. Greez embraces Cal during the trailer and now has a cybernetic limb, following the consequences of the first game’s story. Cere seems to be guarding Jedi archives on her lonesome, while Cal has been off fighting with the Rebellion against the Empire, though his efforts have proven largely futile.
Merrin was an immediate fan favourite after the first game, partly because her backstory demanded it: she belongs to a clan of witchy magic wielders on Dathomir called the Nightsisters, but decided to chart her own part after adventuring with Cal in the first game. We’re not entirely sure what Merrin is up to here, but it looks like she’s learning to wield the Force now. She's also giving Cal some sage advice by warning him not to play with fire.
We also see the sequel’s new tag-team combat mechanic in action, with companions like Merrin taking a more active role in combat alongside Cal. That could include one of the game’s most mysterious new additions: a High Republic Jedi. In the game’s very first trailer, we saw Cal awaken a mysterious figure hibernating in a Bacta tank, and in this trailer we see the same figure adorned in lavish gold-lined robes - the signature look of High Republic Jedi.
The High Republic era is a fairly new addition to Star Wars canon, originally told through novels and comicbooks. This era is set hundreds of years after the Old Republic and around 350 to 50 years before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, depicting the Jedi Order at the apex of their power. It looks like the plot of Jedi Survivor will revolve around Cal awakening a High Republic Jedi to help with the Rebellion, only for said Jedi to have a real problem with what Cal and his friends have allowed to happen to the galaxy.
It also looks like Coruscant will be one of the sequel’s exploreable planets, despite it not being the best place for a fugitive Jedi to be. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will launch on April 28 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
