Henry Cavill to officially star in and produce Warhammer 40K series for Amazon

Henry Cavill’s next move after leaving the Superman cape behind? A Warhammer Cinematic Universe.

Henry Cavill has had a very strange year, to say the least. Earlier this month, the actor announced that he was leaving the role of Superman behind after a creative shakeup at DC Films - mere weeks after announcing his return as the Man of Steel. He even left Netflix’s The Witcher series earlier this year, to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth in Season 4 onwards. His next move? A Warhammer 40K Cinematic Universe.

A report from The Hollywood Reporter - now confirmed by Cavill himself on Instagram - revealed today that the actor is set to star in and produce a series based on Warhammer 40,000. At the time the article was released, THR said that, “Amazon is in final talks for the rights to the game, produced by Games Workshop, after months of negotiations and fending off rival companies that also sought the rights."

Just recently on Instagram however, Cavill confirmed the news, saying:

… after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life. Partnering with Natalie Viscuso at Vertigo has been a blessing beyond words, without her we might not have found the perfect home at Amazon. And having a home like Amazon will give us the freedom to be true to the massive scope of Warhammer.

By Cavill’s wording of the announcement, it sounds like we’re getting a live-action Warhammer universe on Amazon Prime Video, starting with a TV series that he plans to star in. Cavill has not been shy about his avid love for the Warhammer universe in the past, making official visits to Warhammer World, answering interview questions like an absolute nerd and painting miniatures in his spare time. The actor is a particular fan of playing the Total War: Warhammer games.

Warhammer has a rich library of stories to draw from across multiple mediums, ranging from novels and videogames to supplemental boardgames. Just this year, we got Warhammer 40,000: Darktide and in 2023, we’re getting a highly-anticipated sequel to Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. There’s a wealth of material for this series to draw from, but Cavill mentioned that the next step is finding the right creative team to see it through. It’ll be some time before this series makes its debut, but we can only imagine how excited Cavill - and most Warhammer fans - are to see it happen.
