The live-action Resident Evil series has monsters and mayhem to spare.
Netflix’s live-action series adaptation of Resident Evil has dropped a new trailer teasing more zombie mayhem. Fans of Capcom’s horror-survival games will notice a few familiar monsters in this trailer, such as the zombie dogs and iconic Lickers, but there are a few new additions: giant spiders, kaiju caterpillars and more. The show is playing it fast and loose with Resident Evil lore, despite supposedly being set after the events of the games canonically.
Watch the trailer below:
Resident Evil’s story takes place across two timelines: current-day 2022 and the year 2036. In the present-day timeline, the daughters of Albert Wesker (Lance Reddick), Jade (Ella Balinska) and Billie are living in New Raccoon City in South Africa, while their father continues to work for the new and barely improved Umbrella Corporation. Umbrella now puts out an antidepressant drug called Joy, which contains trace amounts of the T-virus.
In the year 2036, a zombie apocalypse has ravaged the world and Jade fights tooth and nail to survive while dealing with trauma in her past, mostly relating to the mysterious fate of her sister Billie. Series showrunner Andrew Dabb (Supernatural) has confirmed that the events of the games are canon to this series, which takes place around the events of Resident Evil Village. This means that Albert Wesker should be dead by now - but we assume an explanation for his sudden revival will come eventually. It’s not even the first time Wesker has come back from the dead!
Resident Evil’s first season consists of eight episodes, hitting Netflix on July 14, 2022. In case you missed it, Capcom also revealed a remake of Resident Evil 4 over the weekend.
