South Africa soon to establish itself in the eSports scene?

Since Bravado Gaming Emotion placed top 5 at MSI Beat IT in Taiwan during 2014, not much else has been shown in regards to South Africa’s level of ability, but all of a sudden there seems to be a dramatic resurgence for the local scene.

With the start of the new Digital Gaming League season in 2016, Telkom announced they would be holding a R1 million tournament ($65,000): The Telkom DGL Masters, with the largest prize pool South African eSports has offered to date.

The event is sure to excite local fans, and shares one thing with the most famous first tournament event, The International: a 1 million dollar prize pool, albeit in dollars worth not nearly as much. Could it be South Africa is preparing to expand and establish themselves in the international scene next?

With teams like White Rabbit Gaming Newb and Aperture Gaming battling through some of the EU TI6 Qualifiers its clear South Africa’s showing a drive to go further.

The tournament is split into 2 games, namely CS:GO and DotA 2, and is set to take place from the 7th to 9th October at the rAge expo, the largest gaming expo of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Only eight Multi-Gaming Organisations are invited:

South Africa Bravado Gaming
South Africa White Rabbit Gaming
South Africa Xperts at Total Chaos.
South Africa Damage Control.
Russia Flipsid3 Tactics (South African division)
South Africa Veneration E-Sports
South Africa Aperture Gaming
South Africa Carbon eSports

The eight will battle it out for a spot to prove whose the region is best and who may be the team to break national boundaries next. With the exposure and potential The Masters tournament brings along with it, who knows what it could hold for the top performing teams.

As we draw closer to the regions most anticipated tournament yet South Africa may hope to finally step into the international scene and find its fame and glory, bringing a new edge to the DotA 2 meta. We’ll find out in one of the largely awaited tournaments coming up after TI6.
