Europa Universalis V announced as Paradox's next big strategy game

We’re officially getting a new Europa Universalis game.

Paradox Interactive has officially announced Europa Universalis V, which it calls “the latest version of one of the greatest strategy games of all time.” The sequel will continue the franchise’s historical strategy gameplay, with players having to develop and advance entire nations following the game’s start date of 1337.

Here’s the game’s announcement video:

Paradox officially announces Europa Universalis V

Paradox Interactive has announced a new entry in the Europa Universalis game franchise: Europa Universalis V. The grand strategy game sequel will allow players to take full control of a country’s development throughout history, starting in the year 1337. The game was originally known to be in development under the codename “Project Caesar.”

Project Caesar has been in the works since 2020, and its developer Paradox Tinto has been marketing the game for years via forum posts called Tinto Talks, diving into the game’s strategy mechanics without officially revealing its true identity. This week, fans finally learned that the game was–somewhat predictably–a sequel to Europa Universalis IV.

Europa Universalis IV launched all the way back in 2013, which means that this sequel has been a long time coming. Players will take control of a nation in 1337, right before the Bubonic Plague and the Hundred Years War, and run all the way up to 1837. That gives players five whole centuries to shape their budding nation.

The game has been built in Unreal Engine 5, simulating hundreds of millions of citizens populating its dense regions. Players will get to rule a land and guide their citizens through the ages, changing the course of history by making strategic decisions along the way. Alternate histories are available to explore, like China pursuing overseas empires for example, for players who wish to render history books irrelevant.

Europa Universalis 5 will launch on PC, but does not have a specific release date yet. The game’s Steam page is now live, with more information for the game.
