This year’s VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) Ascension for the Pacific League, is officially moving from Tokyo to Jakarta.
Originally planned for Tokyo, Japan from 13-23 September, the tournament will now take place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 20-29 September.
Why was VCT Ascension Pacific moved to Jakarta?
According to a press release by Riot Games, the developer VALORANT and the organisers of VCT, they made the difficult decision to relocate the event “due to a number of significant event production delays and tournament quality concerns,” but they wanted to ensure the tournament meets the expectations of the global VALORANT community.
The move to Jakarta was driven by several challenges faced during the planning stages in Tokyo. Organisers encountered significant obstacles, including limited broadcast options, restricted format changes, and potential difficulties in providing optimal competitive conditions for the teams.
“We understand this is a big change and that some of our fans may be disappointed. But we felt this decision was necessary for the benefit of our teams and community,” the statement said.
“Ascension is a key tournament in our competitive season; representing a time for celebration and an opportunity to see new stars come to life. So it is important to us that the event meets the standards our fans have come to expect from us.”
VCT Ascension watch party in Japan
While this piece of news may be disappointing to Japanese fans, Riot promised to prepare something for them.
Watch parties will be organised in Japan so fans can still enjoy the action and feel connected with the Pacific League community.
While specific schedules and details are still being finalised, more information will be shared soon via Japanese social media channels.
Changes made to this year’s Ascension Pacific format
VCT Ascension Pacific 2024 will feature ten of the best teams from South Asia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia & Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong & Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Oceania.
These teams will compete for a coveted spot in the main VCT leagues, making this tournament a critical event in the 2024 VALORANT competitive season.
With the move to Jakarta, the tournament format has also been updated to provide a more straightforward and competitive experience for the teams.
The event will now feature a double elimination bracket, played across eight tournament days.
This simpler format allows for lower bracket opportunities leading up to the grand finals. Matches will be played in a best-of-three format, with the lower finals and grand finals being best-of-five.
