The TCG will be initially released in China, before launching in different regions later on.
Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends, has news about its upcoming physical trading card game Project K. The announcement was made on Friday (December 6):
This is likely the same LoL TCG that was announced on Chinese social media a few months back titled Rune Battlegrounds. At the time, it was announced as a China exclusive. However, in the video reveal, it was announced that it will be first released in China, and then distributed across other regions gradually.
Game director Dave Guskin and executive producer Chengran Chai gave the audience a preview of the cards coming out, and how the game was meant to be played. Dave clarified that Project K won’t be a physical version of Legends of Runeterra, but said that it “inherits some of the rich champion design philosophies of LoR.” The card game will also be able to take advantage of shared artwork across different LoL media.
The video also gives fans a sneak peek at how the game is played. Some of the decks featured were Viktor’s deck, featuring his old artwork, before the post-Arcane VGU. “I’m assembling a lot of very small units and trying to give power spikes,” Codie Christie, Director of Growth and Marketing shared.
Head of Creative Laura DeYoung shared the Volibear deck. “I wouldn’t call this a finesse hand,” she said. “ This is like, how do I go in and just punch everyone in the face?”
Marc Merill shared a preview of the Yasuo deck, which he described as “Calm Chaos,” probably referring to a less aggressive hand that still has the ability to stir things around.
Finally, Senior narrative writer, Cat Cheresh shared the Jinx deck, which she called a “Fury Chaos Tempo aggro deck” that “pretty much just causes as much mayhem as possible.”
Project K will support 1v1 PvP and multiplayer
Although Dave shared that they wanted attract strong competitive players who love one-on-one duels, they said that “starting fresh also let us design it from the ground up to support multiplayer.”
Dave said that the team believes that the team has created “the best social TCG” for lots of players to enjoy, “whether your jam is team 2v2 battles or free-for-alls, a way to relax with friends or go all in on alliances, backstabbing and betrayals.”
Cheresh also shared that the deck is very flexible in accommodating casual players, adding a collectible element to the physical TCG. Chengran Chai shared how Project K plans to take the TCG and promote these in the local stores—and even organise competitions from the local store level, before scaling up from regional to international competitions.
Riot Games has not announced a release date for Project K.
