The G1-Series to determine the CIS Winter Champion started two weeks ago, today Cats Gaming emerges once again as the ultimate champion of the region. In a rematch of the Upper Bracket Finals the team around Guesswho defeated Eazy once again to claim their third consecutive G1-Series Championship.
The CIS region is most likely the third biggest region in Heroes of Newerth today, but the Winter Championship that Garena presented were top-notch. Every single day the best of the region competed for the ultimate price - the G1-Series Championship of the region. In previous tournaments a victory in this tournament would also guarantee a seed in one of the big international tournament like DreamHack or the Garena Star League, this time "only" money was on the line.
From the Group Stage on Cats Gaming showed their dominance in the region, topping the Group with 6 victories and only one loss throughout their seven opening matches. That accomplishment granted them the top seed in the upcoming Double-Elimination tournament. Alongside the reigning and defending Champion three other teams made a run all the way into the playoff brackets with Eazy, GZ and STG (consisting of former GA.ru members).
Cats Gaming could keep up their pace from the earlier stage and just dismantle the competition with a sweep against STG and Eazy in the Upper Bracket Finals. The rematch of that was the Grand Final for all the marbles, the Championship and the $3,000 USD for first place. On the way to that Grand Final Eazy had to play the Ukrainian team GZ twice, first in the Upper Bracket Semis, then in the Lower Bracket Finals to get the rematch match against Cats. They won both, first 2-1, then with a clear sweep to secure their second place finish and eliminate GZ out of the tournament.
In the Grand Finals this afternoon Cats had a 1-0 cushion to start the Best of Five series and managed to get in front to a 2-0 situation right after the first match. Eazy wasn't a push over, but Cats Gaming proved to be still on another level in the CIS region. Eazy managed to win the third match to make the contest a little more interesting, but shortly after that Cats went for the killing blow.
The victory marks the third consecutive G1-Series Championship for Cats Gaming and solidifies their standing in the entire CIS scene. While the other teams can play catch up Cats Gaming will represent the region in the upcoming Garena Star League 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand with $60,000 USD on the line.
