In an interview with PC Gamer, Diablo 3 game director Jay Wilson talked about a possible console version of Diablo 3 as well as his experiences with a controller-based interface.
As you are all probably aware, Blizzard hasn't released a game on home consoles since the glory days of the Playstation and the Nintendo 64, with Diablo and StarCraft 64 respectively. The ill-fated StarCraft: Ghost never made it to store shelves and they have released nothing but PC games eversince.
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, game director Jay Wilson talked about the possibility of leading the Diablo franchise back to consoles, commenting on the difference in control schemes perhaps a bit too enthusiastically for the traditionally...let's say elitist PC gamer crowd.
He mentioned that Blizzard see themselves not "as a PC developer" but "a game developer" and that they have always toyed with the idea of putting their franchises onto home consoles; they just didn't happen to fit. Or, in his words, it's impossible to make an RTS on a console which would be "Blizzard great".
Diablo 3 however seems to be right up that alley and as he very delightedly commented, the gamepad controls seems to be even more fitting than the standard mouse/keyboard setup. "With some of our early experiments in putting a direct control scheme into the game via a 360-like analogue controller, I've been 'Oh this feels even better, with direct control…'", a sentiment sure to stir up some confusion in Blizzard's traditionally PC-centered fanbase.
