ULFHEDNAR's run through M6 Wildcard Stage marred by controversial deciding game versus DFYG

Game three of the match between ULFHEDNAR and DFYG was marred by controversy after DFYG's carry disconnected and dived into an enemy tower.

ULFHEDNAR advanced to the M6 World Championship Swiss Stage after a dominant run through the Wildcard Stage that was capped off with a 3-0 sweep over Insilio in the Wildcard Decider match on Sunday (November 24).

However, the Turkish team's victory has been marred by controversy that was sparked by an incident during their match versus DianFengYaoGuai (DFYG) in the Wildcard Group Stage.

The match between ULFHEDNAR and DFYG in day three of the Wildcard decided which team would face Insilio in the M6 Wildcard Decider. ULFHEDNAR took first blood against the Chinise representative before Loong and his teammates took one back.

But during the third game of the series, at 18:09 to be precise, DFYG jungler  Liu “Zzzed” Chenjia uncharacteristically walked into ULFHEDNAR's turret during a crucial teamfight in the top lane despite his team holding the lead. This led to Zzzed's death to the turret and a technical pause to be called. When the game resumed, ULFHEDNAR took advantage of the golden opportunity they suddenly found themselves with to complete a comeback to win the series after 26 minutes.

Shortly after the match, DFYG submitted an appeal to the M6 Committee and an investigation was launched.

However, the M6 Committee announced the next day that there would be no rematch for game three of ULFHEDNAR vs DFYG. The reasoning given behind the decision was that the force majeure event that happened to DFYG's jungler didn't meet the relevant requirements to warrant a rematch.

The M6 Committee also admitted during the match that Zzzed had confessed to the referee that there was a pop-up notification on his phone unrelated to the tournament that didn't allow him to operate the game normally. The referee verified the event and restored the device to the tournament state.

However, to be eligible to warrant a rematch, the case should tick at least one criterion detailed inside the M6 World Championship rulebook. These are rules 6.10.2.1 to 6.10.2.3, which detailed as such:

  • 6.10.2.1. If a game experiences a critical bug at any point during the match which significantly alters game stats or gameplay mechanics.
  • 6.10.2.2. If the M6 Committee determines that there are environmental conditions which are unfair (e.g., excessive noise, fan gank, hostile weather, unacceptable safety risks).
  • 6.10.2.3. Any force majeure causes the game have to remake (e.g., the game comes to two hours include BP and pause time).

The incident – and the gravity of it occurring in this year's MLBB world championship tournament – have forced the M6 organisers and MLBB developer MOONTON Games to implement measures to prevent it from reoccurring as well as begin development on a feature that would allow competitive games to be rewound.

"We express our sincere regret for the technical issue that occurred during this game and for its impact on DFYG zzzed and DFYG. We have identified the cause of the issue and have implemented strict measures to ensure that it does not reoccur in this tournament. Additionally, we are also working on a feature to allow us to rewind competitive games for future tournaments," MOONTON said in a press release.

Unfortunately for DFYG, the M6 Committee finding no reason to implement a rematch meant they have been knocked out of the M6 World Championship in 18th-19th place. Meanwhile, ULFHEDNAR have advanced to the tournament's Swiss Stage.

The M6 World Championship will take place from November 21 to December 15 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and is split into three distinct phases: the Wildcard Stage from November 21 to 24, the Swiss Stage from November 28 to December 5, and the Knockout Stage from December 7 to 15.
