Without further ado, here is everything you need to know about the M6 World Championship:
Dates, venue, and prize pool
The M6 World Championship is set to take place from November 21 to December 15 2024. The tournament will start with the Wildcard Stage from November 21 to November 24, followed by the Swiss Stage from November 28 to December 5. The Knockout Stage will then kick off on December 7 and will run until the Grand Finals on December 15.
This year’s championship will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The venue for the initial stages has not yet been announced, while the semifinals and grand final will be hosted at the place where it all began, Axiata Arena.
The prize pool for the M6 World Championship is $1 million and will be distributed among the participating teams based on their final standings. Detailed allocation, however, has yet to be announced.
M6 World Championship Swiss Stage explained
This year, the M6 World Championship will adopt a new format: the Swiss Stage. This stage will feature 16 teams competing across five rounds. Each team will play against opponents with similar win-loss records, which means that after each round, teams with the same number of wins will face off against each other.
This pairing system will continue until eight teams achieve three match wins, thus securing their spots in the Knockout Stage, while the other eight teams with three losses will be eliminated.
This format reduces the chances of early elimination from a bad match, allowing teams to recover and showcase their prowess over multiple games. It also ensures that the most consistent and adaptable teams advance, making the competition more unpredictable.
The teams competing in the M6 World Championship
The 23 best teams competing in the M6 World Championship marks the highest number of participants for the series to date. Eight teams will compete in the Wild Card stage, with the winner of that preliminary stage joining the other 15 that directly qualified for the Swiss Stage. This year, two teams from the M Challenge Cup Mekong Season 3 will join the Wildcard Stage with a special clause: no two teams from the same country can qualify for the slot.
