G2 Esports claim a fairly comfortable win over PSG Talon to move on further at the Mid-Season Invitational.
The first of two best-of-five series today saw G2 Esports eliminate PSG Talon from the Mid-Season Invitational with a 3-0 sweep in the lower bracket. That was G2's first win in the tournament and will now see them move on further in the tournament with their next opponent being the LPL second seed, Top Esports.
Unfortunately for PSG, they became the sixth team to be eliminated from the tournament and have joined Fnatic in a shared seventh/eighth-place finish. While it is still a top-eight finish, it's still far from PSG's best finish that came during their MSI debut in 2021 that saw them place in the final four. Despite all that, PSG have had stellar performances during the tournament, specifically against FlyQuest and Bilibili Gaming.
As for G2, they were unfortunate to lose their opening best-of-five against T1 that saw them drop to the lower bracket. They did, however, take out their frustrations on PSG. And who else to lead G2's resurgence at MSI but Rasmus “Caps” Winther as his Tristana went absolutely ballistic. This included a triple as well as a quad kill on two separate occasions for G2's star midlaner as he closed out the first match for G2 with 14 kills and eight assists with just two deaths.
Both teams made just a handful of changes in game two as G2 replaced Zac and Tristana for Twisted Fate and Leblanc while PSG swapped out K'Sante for Jax. And this worked out extremely well for G2 as they were able to keep PSG at bay, limiting the PCS champions to just four kills for the entirety of game two. This left three players from G2 with flawless KDAs that included Caps alongside Martin “Yike” Sundelin and Steven “Hans sama” Liv.
G2's jungler in particular showcased great rotations as his Jarvan IV racked up four kills alongside 16 assists. As for Caps, his Leblanc managed five kills and 10 assists, another consistent showing on the main stage. And it showed in game three as his Orianna was a thorn in PSG's side with another flawless performance alongside Sergen “BrokenBlade” Çelik on Vayne.
However, game three saw G2's bottom lane duo dominate from start to finish as Hans sama's Varus nabbed eight kills to go with a singular death and six assists. This was also Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle's third straight game of the series with Poppy that proved to be one of G2's more consistent performers.
