Rekkles is officially teamless for the first time in over a decade.
It's official: Martin "Rekkles" Larsson is no longer part of Fnatic as the prolific AD carry-turned-support has bid farewell to his former team. This has left Rekkles in a predicament that he's never found himself in over a decade - teamless.
Both parties announced the departure on their respective Twitter accounts but it was Rekkles' post that garnered plenty of attention, especially at the notion that he is officially changing his role from an AD carry to a full-time support player. According to Rekkles, a dream scenario would be him playing support in the LEC, which is something he has been grinding towards for the past five months.
I don't think I was ready for summer and therefore declined offers, but as of late I think I've reached a level of play on Support that's relatively high. Obviously I'm open to playing ADC as well, but I think my persona, skills as a player and view of the game is better utilized on the Support role than the ADC role. Basically, I think I can bring more to a team on the Support role than the ADC role and in the end that's all that I want. Doing as much as possible for my team so that we win games.
While many had envisioned Rekkles' return to Fnatic as a catalyst for bringing the team back to the top, it ultimately did not pan out. Fnatic's LEC Winter split campaign saw them finish second-last in the regular season, which meant they missed out on the group stage. The team's spring performances were slightly better as they finished in sixth but still couldn't get past the group stage.
Rekkles soon moved to an inactive role in late April, which was also around the same time he had opted to try and switch from AD carry to support. As stated in the tweet, he did not feel ready in the summer, which led to him being benched by Fnatic. He had also declined offers from other teams.
While this may have placed a blemish on his otherwise glittering career, Rekkles and Fnatic will always be a match-made in heaven, especially given how much they've succeeded together over the years. He is an eight-time LEC MVP who has lifted four LEC (then known as EU LCS) regional title with Fnatic, making him one of the most accomplished players of his generation.
Whether or not Rekkles will make another appearance in the LEC remains to be seen. It also depends on how Worlds 2023 plays out with all four LEC teams still in the competition. As for Fnatic, they are currently in the Swiss stage of Worlds 2023 as they await the final two teams from the Play-In Stage to begin their journey to lifting the Summoner's Cup.
