The creator of The Last of Us, Neil Druckmann, said not to bet on The Last of Us Part III.
Neil Druckmann, creator of The Last of Us, said not to bet on The Last of Us Part III becoming a reality. The statement was said by Neil himself during an interview with Variety, regarding Season 2 of the HBO TV adaptation of The Last of Us.
Neil attended the interview to promote the launch of The Last of Us Season 2, when he was asked the question. Variety noted that Neil sighed while admitting that he had been waiting for that question. He answered with:
“I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of Last of Us. This could be it.”

Previously, The Last of Us creator was keen to talk about the prospect of The Last of Us Part III. During a game developer panel at DICE, Neil shared some information regarding the future of the franchise. While nothing was explicitly confirmed, he talked about assessing characters who were left in the previous game, asking himself in which direction they could go now, and joked about killing them off if they couldn't go anywhere.
However, with this new statement, it seems like the game might not have any continuation, leaving Ellie's story concluded with Part II. However, the series is projected to keep chugging along, as it will soon premier on 13 April, 2025. It was also noted that during the interview with Variety, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann were positive that a third season will be realised, but nothing is confirmed yet.
Naughty Dog is working on a new title called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a sci-fi game that takes place in the future with cyberpunk-esque aesthetics. The game looks to have a mature vibe akin to The Last of Us, with a darker color scheme and gritty dialogue.
The Last of Us Part II was released in 2020, and later remastered for the PlayStation 5 on January 2024.
