GTA 6 may very well be the next Roblox.

Rockstar Games has reportedly met with popular Roblox and Fortnite content creators to explore making user-generated custom game modes in Grand Theft Auto 6. According to Digiday, which cites “three industry insiders with knowledge of these meetings,” the game developer is looking to turn its next big open-world game into a metaverse-like platform for creators.

Is GTA 6 aiming to be the next metaverse gaming platform?

According to Digiday, Rockstar Games is planning to take GTA 6 in a rather unexpected direction. The outlet reported that Rockstar has been meeting with various creators from user-generated game platforms like Fortnite and Roblox to create “custom experiences inside the upcoming game.”

Digiday claims that Rockstar wants to allow players to build their own custom game modes and experience inside GTA 6, presumably with multiplayer gameplay enabled. This will see the company double down on the roleplaying experiences that have allowed GTA 5 to thrive for all this year.

Creators have used multiplayer mod frameworks like FiveM to join and create multiplayer game servers in GTA 5 for years now, allowing players to play together in specific virtual worlds they can come to call their own. However, FiveM also charges users subscription fees for the usage of these GTA servers, with both the server’s creators and FiveM itself taking cuts of the profits.

It’s likely that Rockstar is looking into monetising GTA 6 in a similar way, only without allowing third-party companies to make money off of its game. However, it should be noted that Digiday’s report has not been corroborated by other outlets, nor has it been confirmed by official sources - so do take this news with a grain of salt.

GTA 6 is slated to release sometime in 2025. The game takes place in modern-day Vice City, which served as the setting for 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. In this sequel, players will take on a story that centers around two protagonists: a female lead named Lucia, and her as-yet unnamed male partner.
