Hideo Kojima hints at delays for Overdose and Physint, Death Stranding 2 still on track

Both projects were affected by the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Two of Hideo Kojima’s upcoming projects, namely the horror game Overdose as well as Metal Gear’s spiritual successor Physint, have encountered some difficulties over the past year and may face some delays. Kojima himself revealed this in a thank you message he posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) on December 31, 2024.

In his post, Kojima recapped what he and his team have achieved in 2024, including developments for Death Stranding 2, among others.

"It was a year full of many things: [Death Stranding 2] development, the release of our second trailer, ADR for the actors, music production and recording, [and] Japanese voice recording. In the summer, we started to play and build up the game."

Kojima also shared that “preparations and planning for the live-action [Death Stranding] film with A24 as well as other adaptations are underway.

One project that hit a bit of a snag was Overdose. Kojima shared how the game was in development, with actor and environment scanning. However, the latter was suspended in the second half of the year “due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.”

The game was first announced in 2023, in partnership with Xbox to “explore the concept of testing your fear threshold and what it means to overdose on fear.”

Overdose is one of the most-anticipated upcoming projects from Kojima. This experimental horror game aims to break new ground by utilising Microsoft Technology to create something unique.

Physint was also affected according to the renown video game designer.  The game was announced during the PlayStation State of Play in January 2024. Described as a "next-gen action espionage game," Physint remains in early pre-production. Kojima stated that full-scale development would commence after Death Stranding 2 is completed.

In July 2024, SAG-AFTRA went on strike against video game companies amid AI concerns, which affected the development of many games, including Overdose and Physint. Kojima said in the post that they “hope to resume [in 2025]”.
