Ghostface from the Scream franchise is coming to Mortal Kombat - but who’s behind the mask?
NetherRealm Studios has dropped a gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1’s latest DLC fighter: Ghostface, the iconic killer from the Scream franchise. Fans of the Scream movies (and short-lived TV spin-off) will notice multiple easter eggs in this trailer, from Ghostface pulling off brutal knife tricks from the movies, to calling in a second Ghostface using an actual phone.
Before you watch the trailer below however, I have to ask: do you like scary movies?
Scream’s Ghostface dials into Mortal Kombat 1
Scream franchise mascot and horror icon Ghostface is officially joining the ranks of Mortal Kombat 1’s playable roster next week. This week, NetherRealm Studios showed fans a new look at the upcoming DLC character, who brings his signature knife to the fray for bloody close-ranged combat. Voice actor Roger L. Jackson, who voices Ghostface in every Scream installment regardless of who’s behind the mask, has also returned to play the killer in this DLC.
Scream fans should be pleased with how Ghostface is incorporated into Mortal Kombat’s already-gory gameplay. The killer wields a knife, much like in the movies, but also has a special dive move that allows him to quickly crawl across the ground to either slash at enemies’ legs or stab their toes. He also has a command run to chase down his enemy – just like in the movies – and transition to either a stab or a grab.
Ghostface can also call in a second Ghostface (multiple killers!) to essentially teleport around the screen and catch enemies off guard, seemingly by dialling in a friend’s number. The killer’s first Fatality was shown a while back, and involved two Ghostface killers taking down an enemy together. A new Fatality was shown during this week’s gameplay trailer, and it’s a lot more meta: after the Fatality is activated, the camera pulls back to reveal that Johnny Cage is playing Mortal Kombat on his TV. After exclaiming “He’s just a dude with a knife!” in frustration, Ghostface emerges from behind his couch and stabs him in the chest.
The gameplay trailer also reveals Ghostface’s Animality, which has the killer transform into a vulture only to stab at enemies with its beak. Ghostface will arrive in Mortal Kombat 1 on November 19, 2024, included in the game’s upcoming Khaos Reigns expansion. Upcoming DLC fighters for the game also include Terminator 2: Judgement Day’s Terminator T-1000 and Conan the Barbarian.
