Fortnite is bringing its original map back as a permanent game mode.

Epic Games has announced the return of Fortnite OG, a mini season that brought back the game’s original map and loot – but this time, as part of a new permanent game mode. The upcoming Fortnite OG mode will rotate through the game’s original 10 seasons of content throughout 2024 and 2025, offering players a chance to relive the battle royale game in its original form.

Fortnite OG returns, with original loot and map changes in permanent game mode

Players have clamoured for a return of Fortnite OG, the game’s mini season that brought back Chapter 1 content, since its addition to the game in late 2023. This year, Epic Games showed they were listening by bringing back a remixed version of Chapter 2 to conclude the entirety of Chapter 5 – but that’s not all.

The developer has also announced the return of Fortnite OG as a full-blown permanent game mode, running through each of the game’s Chapter 1 seasons (of which there are 10) with little to no changes. This includes all of the game’s original loot, map changes and live events – like the meteor that hit the game’s original map, or the volcano that erupted and destroyed certain points of interest. There’s a lot of nostalgia to be had here for Fortnite players who have been playing from day one, that’s for sure.

Epic’s reasons for bringing Fortnite OG back are no mystery. 2023’s Fortnite OG mini season was a massive success for the developer, bringing the game’s player count up to new heights (44.7 million players in 24 hours). There’s clearly an audience for this sort of thing, and Epic could keep it going with Chapter 2 content well into 2026 if it really wants to. The main question on our minds is whether the game’s Chapter 1 battle passes will also make a return, finally allowing new players to scoop up long-lost cosmetics.

Anyone who isn’t interested in Fortnite OG can also look forward to the game’s next chapter of content, titled Chapter 6, launching on December 1, 2024. Fortnite isn’t the only game doubling down on nostalgia this year, either. Apex Legends is bringing back its original map and Overwatch: Classic is also bringing back its old 6v6 matches.

Fortnite OG kicks off on December 6, 2024.
