A month after its September 9 release, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has become the most successful Warhammer game ever launched.
Publisher Focus Entertainment thanked its 4.5 million-strong playerbase for joining the Emperor’s cause in Space Marine 2 and making the game the most played Warhammer 40,000 game in the franchise’s history in a statement on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Just a day after its launch, Space Marine 2 crossed the 2 million-mark thanks in large part to strong pre-orders. The game also became Steam’s eleventh-biggest launch for 2024, with its first advanced access release day peaking at over 134,000 concurrent users as per SteamDB. Space Marine 2 also enjoyed an all-time peak of over 225,000 players on Steam, making it the most-played Warhammer game on the platform.
Space Marine 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine game released in 2011. The sequel follows the titular Space Marine Demetrian Titus as he rejoins his original Chapter, the Ultramarines, after a long service in the Deathwatch following the events of the original game. Now demoted to the rank of Lieutenant, Titus is accompanied by fellow Space Marines Gadriel and Chairon as they spearhead the Imperium of Man's never-ending battle for survival against the horrors of the universe, including the unstoppable Xenos tide that is the Tyranids and the treacherous forces of the Chaos Space Marines.
Space Marine 2 to release Free and Premium content
In a new post-launch overview, Focus Entertainment has revealed what’s in store for Space Marine 2’s future content.
Battle Brothers can expect the first major update to feature new maps, modes, and cosmetics, as well as a new Lethal Difficulty and PvE operation: Termination, which includes a face-off with the largest threat the Tyranid swarm has to offer: the Hierophant Bio-Titan.
The first major update will be free for all players and is already out now.
For the rest of the year and throughout 2025, free and new content will be gradually added to Space Marine 2. These will include a new weapon in the Neo-Volkite pistol, new PvE operations, PvP maps and modes, and a Horde Mode that will challenge players' will to survive. Additional free and premium cosmetics will also be made available.
Players who availed the Season Pass can also expect more coming their way, with the game's first major update coming with a pack that focuses on the Dark Angels Chapter. The Dark Angles pack features exclusive themed weapon styles, armour pieces, and colour schemes featuring the Unforgiven.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
