Ghost of Yotei follows a new protagonist in a story set 300 years after Jin Sakai’s adventures.
PlayStation Studios and Sucker Punch Productions have announced Ghost of Yotei, the highly-anticipated sequel to 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima. The game will once again have players step into the sandals of a warrior in Feudal Japan, but in a surprising turn of events, that warrior won’t be Jin Sakai. This sequel takes place 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, following an all-new protagonist who dons the Ghost mask in a land now known as Hokkaido.

Ghost of Yotei announced with new protagonist, set 300 years after first game
Developer Sucker Punch Productions is trying something new with Ghost of Yotei, as the Ghost of Tsushima sequel will feature a new protagonist in Atsu, who dons the Ghost mask in the year 1603. Atsu will be played by Erika Ishii (Dropout, Dragon Age: The Veilguard).
According to a PlayStation Blog post penned by the developer, the decision to shift protagonists was due to the team wanting to make “something fresh but familiar” with the Ghost as the center of the franchise rather than Jin Sakai or the island of Tsushima. “At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”
The sequel’s campaign takes place in “the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo”, a place known in the present day as Hokkaido. This area was outside of Japan’s rule in 1603 and filled with wild grasslands, snowy tundras and plentiful dangers - a departure from the samurai clan-controlled setting of the first game.
The trailer looks every bit as visually breathtaking as Ghost of Tsushima did in 2020 and then some, and Sucker Punch claims that it has built on the previous game to make “the world feel even more real” with “massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future.”
The sequel will also introduce new mechanics, gameplay changes, and weapons for Atsu to fight with – including guns, which were introduced to Japan by the Portuguese in the year 1543. Ghost of Yotei launches on the PlayStation 5 sometime in 2025.
