Minecraft’s official PlayStation 5 version launches in preview mode this week.

Mojang Studios has announced that a native version of Minecraft is coming to the PlayStation 5, with small performance and visual upgrades to bring the game up to current-gen standards. The PS5 version of the game can now be previewed by anyone who owns the PS4 version, as Mojang starts to test for bugs before a full launch.

Native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft launches preview this week

Mojang’s smash hit sandbox survival game Minecraft is finally getting a native version for the PS5. Previously, PS5 console owners were relegated to playing the PS4 version on the console, but this current-gen version of the game should give them some nice performance upgrades. Users on Reddit are already noting that the game now runs at 60fps at higher resolutions, using the early preview mode.

However, it’s worth noting that the native PS5 version of the game still seems to lack ray tracing, which is a feature currently only available on PC versions of Minecraft. Curiously, Microsoft has also now confirmed a native PS5 version of the game before a native Xbox Series X|S version, despite its ownership of Mojang Studios. Corporate synergy can only get you so far, it seems.

Here’s how you can access Minecraft’s PS5 version early: Open the PS4 version of Minecraft on your PS5, and navigate to Settings to find the Preview button. That will give you access to an early version of Minecraft on PS5, including content from the new Tricky Trials update. The new update lets players craft maces and explore trial chambers, so there’s no shortage of new stuff to do there.

A release date for Minecraft’s full PS5 version has not been announced, but it likely isn’t too far away now.
