Hideo Kojima unveils ambitious new horror game OD with Jordan Peele

Hideo Kojima’s next game is ‘for all players and screamers’, made in collaboration with Jordan Peele.

Hideo Kojima has officially announced his next original game: OD. The project came accompanied with a creepy but enigmatic teaser during The Game Awards 2023, where the developer confirmed that OD would be a wholly new experience that is a game, but also a movie and a new form of media all at the same time. It wouldn’t be a Kojima game if it wasn’t aiming high, after all.

Here’s the game’s first trailer:

Everything we know about Hideo Kojima’s OD

Kojima Productions’ reveal trailer for OD confirmed that the game stars Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer and Udo Kier - a triple threat of celebrities who appear terrified out of their minds in the above video. This game is being developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology, though to what end is unknown. Kojima played his cards close to his chest during this reveal, keeping further details of the game under wraps.

Horror movie director (and occasional comedian) Jordan Peele is working with Kojima on this mystery project, having affirmed that he was a huge fan of the game director’s work during the reveal. Kojima is also working with several more (undoubtedly A-list) creators on this game, but we’ll likely learn more about their actual identities later on. Kojima has been employing more and more celebrities in his projects recently, so this should come as no surprise.

The actual nature of OD is a mystery, but Kojima did confirm that it is in fact a game - which means that it’s a playable experience, but also a movie and a new form of media. This looks much more experimental than Death Stranding’s trippy story and hiking gameplay, but we do know that it’s a horror title at the very least. Kojima is seemingly developing this and Death Stranding 2 simultaneously, though the latter seems closer to an actual release.

This isn’t Kojima’s first brush with horror. After Konami dropped the ball on the creator’s planned Silent Hill game, Kojima moved on to make new games with his own studio Kojima Productions. Konami, meanwhile, has also moved on to make a fleet of new Silent Hill games of its own.
