Star Wars Outlaws will let you betray Jabba the Hutt and visit Tatooine

Tatooine seems to be the center of a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars Outlaws is bringing players back to Tatooine and mob boss Jabba the Hutt, according to a new behind-the-scenes video from Ubisoft. Developer Massive Entertainment shared more details on the many planets players can explore in the game, one of which happens to be a desert planet this franchise can’t help but revisit time upon time again.

Watch the video below:

Star Wars Outlaws is set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in the original trilogy era, which gives Ubisoft plenty of room to deliver franchise nostalgia - and they’re taking full advantage. The video not only tells us that Kay Vess will be visiting Tatooine during her adventures, but she’ll probably be tasked with escorting some very precious cargo: Han Solo, who has just been frozen in a slab of carbonite.

Images from the desert planet Tatooine also reveal Jabba the Hutt, the crime lord ruling over Tatooine’s seedy underbelly. Given that Kay mostly operates in the shadowy parts of the galaxy, it makes sense that she’d stumble upon a job from the slug-like mob boss. Solo is an outlaw with quite the reputation, and someone had to get him to Jabba safely. Why not Kay? Outlaws is an open world game, which means that you’ll be able to explore Jabba’s Palace and perhaps even encounter his Rancor. Hopefully not, though.

You’ll also be able to check into Mos Eisley, a nowhere-town populated by suspicious characters aplenty. Most of these villains congregate in the Mos Eisley cantina, a lively little bar that players will also be able to enter. Ubisoft said of the game’s environments: “We have created everything with an authentic approach, so players will experience all these places like someone who actually is there.”

There are a few new planets in Outlaws to see, of course. Massive Entertainment showed off the moon Toshara, with wild open plains inspired by the African Savannah. This is the moon we saw Kay flee from the empire in during the game’s announcement trailer. Ubisoft describes the moon as having a, “scoundrel fantasy at its beating heart,” for players to experience.

Ubisoft talks about wanting to, “create a world that feels alive,” and that involves giving each planet distinct areas to explore. Toshara has windswept plains and cave-like veins of Amberine, but it also has a, “vibrant city,” called Murugana, which has been built into a massive rock carved out by the planet’s strong winds. The level of detail Ubisoft is going for extends to each planet having unique wildlife and lifestyles for its populace.

Ubisoft seems to be trying its best to make a Star Wars game that has, “never been done before,” with immersive worlds and lots of player agency in where Kay Vess can go and what she can do. Hopefully, Star Wars Outlaws lives up to that when it launches in 2024.
