Li Mei, Tanya and Baraka have also been confirmed for the main roster.
Developer NetherRealm Studios dropped by San Diego Comic Con last weekend to debut new details about its upcoming fighting game Mortal Kombat 1. The developer released a new trailer revealing three returning fighters joining the base roster - Tanya, Li Mei and Baraka - along with five DLC characters: Homelander from The Boys, Omni-Man from Invincible, Peacemaker from The Suicide Squad and returning characters Quan Chi, Takeda and Ermac.
Watch the story trailer below:
The new Umgadi trailer sheds light on another aspect of Mortal Kombat 1’s rebooted universe - this time focusing on the princess of Edenia Mileena, and theTarkatian disease slowly turning her into a gruesome bloodthirsty monster. She and Kitana are trying to keep the disease hidden from others in an effort to protect Edenian peace, but they aren’t doing a great job of it.
The trailer introduces us to the Umgadi warriors - warrior priestesses who defend the royal Edenian family. Their former leader Li Mei arrives on Edenia to investigate Mileena’s disease with Liu Kang, but her old Umgadi cohort Tanya jumps to Mileena’s defense against her. Meanwhile, Baraka - and the other Tarkatians who are closer to succumbing to the Tarkat disease than Mileena - seem convinced that Liu Kang can do nothing to help them.
The trailer also confirms Khameleon and Darrius as Kameo fighters. That’s not all, though - NetherRealm also finally made their long-rumoured Kombat Pack lineup of DLC fighters official over the weekend. Homelander, Omni-Man and Peacemaker will appear as crossover characters from other franchises, while longtime favourites Takeda, Quan Chi and Ermac round out the DLC pack. While we’re not sure if Antony Starr will return as Homelander from the Boys, or John Cena as Peacemaker from the DC Universe, we do know that J.K. Simmons will return to voice Omni-Man from Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible series.
Most Mortal Kombat games launch with a specific theme for their DLC fighters. Mortal Kombat 10 had horror characters like the Xenomorph from Alien and the Yautja warrior from Predator, while Mortal Kombat 11 had action movie heroes like Rambo and Robocop. This time around, the theme seems to be dark superheroes with a penchant for violence, which gives NetherRealm a very deep pool to draw from for future fighters.
Mortal Kombat 1 will launch on September 19, 2023.
