The Witcher Season 3 gets a first-look image and story synopsis as filming begins.

Netflix’s The Witcher has officially begun filming its next season. The show announced production had begun on Twitter with an early set photo, which features its main cast gathered on location.

The image, scarce on details as it is, features Henry Cavill (Geralt), Freya Allen (Ciri) and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) sitting around on chairs in a snowy location. Season 2 ended with Geralt realising that Ciri couldn’t be kept safe at Kaer Morhen with the rest of the witchers, and the trio needed a new plan to protect her from the dangers of the outside world. This icy area might be a pit stop on their next journey, then.

The Witcher’s Twitter account also revealed an early plot summary of Season 3, which details Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer’s upcoming adventure:

As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.

Season 3 of The Witcher will adapt Andrezj Sapkowski's novel Time of Contempt, which is the second entry in the Witcher books this series is based on. Judging from the synopsis, this season will have a lot more focus on magic - whereas Season 2 was more centered on monstrous creatures crawling out of monoliths. Jaskier (Joey Batey) has to pop up at some point, but we probably won’t see him show up at the magical academy of Aretuza, which is where Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer are headed to next.

According to Netflix, Season 3’s episodes will be directed by Stephen Surjik (Reacher, The Umbrella Academy), Gandja Monteiro (Brand New Cherry Flavor, The Chi), Loni Peristere (American Horror Story, A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Bola Ogun (Raising Dion, Lucifer).

Season 2 of The Witcher began filming in early 2020 and concluded much later in April 2021 after multiple delays due to the pandemic. If Season 3’s filming goes smoothly, we could see it hit Netflix sometime in 2023. Before then, we’ll get a spin-off series called Blood Origin. CD Projekt has also announced a new game in The Witcher saga is in the works.
