BetBoom Dacha features odd regions merger for qualifiers leg

BetBoom Dacha Dubai 2024 is the first tournament of the new year to boast a $1,000,000 prize pool, but the qualifiers battle is brutal as some of the biggest regions are being merged.

The closed regional battle for BetBoom Dacha Dubai 2024 is set to start this coming Sunday, January 7 with a total of five regions. Oddly enough, while choosing to keep the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the BetBoom Dacha tournament organiser, Fissure, decided to make a big leap back in time and merge some other regions.

Somewhat understandable, Fissure merged North and South American regions for their upcoming event. Although the tournament organiser didn’t give any details or reasoning for their decision, the lack of results for either SA or Na through the past few years could be a possible explanation.

What’s actually intriguing is Fissure’s decision to merge Southeast Asia and China regions into one bracket. There are four Chinese teams and four teams representing SEA competing together for one ticket to the one million-dollar tournament. Seeing these two regions merged is particularly odd given the fact that China has just claimed the ESL One Kuala Lumpur trophy in December of last year.

More so, at The International 2023, which concluded in November 2023, China had two teams finishing in the top four. Azure Ray, who placed fourth at TI12 and who are the ESL One Kuala Lumpur Champions will be fighting for a ticket to Dubai in the CN and SEA regional qualifiers, while LGD, who finished third at TI12 and 9th-10th in Kuala Lumpur, have been given a direct invite to Dubai.

It will be interesting to see if any of the SEA teams will deliver the upset in the BetBoom Dacha closed qualifier. If none of the SEA teams qualifies for the LAN portion of the tournament, then the region will be represented only by Aurora, a new entry in the Dota 2 scene, who signed an all-star lineup in the post TI12 shuffle and have been granted a direct invite to the upcoming LAN.

While some of the biggest teams are fighting in merged regions for a ticket to Dubai, the newly installed MENA region has the smallest pool of teams competing for a spot in the event. Although the region featured two legs of open qualifiers, there were not enough teams to actually compete in both.  At the same time there are just four teams invited to the closed qualifiers and it is still unclear if they will be joined or not by any other competitor coming from open brackets.

Western and Eastern Europe were the only regions to be kept separate as the competition in both of these two is quite fierce. EEU has two teams directly invited to the LAN event in Dubai, Team Spirit and BetBoom Team and they are guaranteed to have one more competitor joining from closed qualifiers.

All eyes will most probably be on Virtus.pro, who made more than a decent showing at TI12. However, the EEU qualifier marks the debut of what many in the competitive scene see as the best up-and-coming carry player. At only 15 years old, Satanic sits 3rd on the European leaderboards with 12K MMR while having an 11K MMR account on SEA servers as well. He played most of his early games on SEA servers due to living in Vietnam with his parents. However, 2024 is the year when he is making a push for a pro career and will play for a spot at BetBoom Dacha Dubai with Yellow Submarine.

Western Europe closed qualifiers feature the likes of Team Secret, OG, Tundra Esports and Entity all fighting for one ticket. Much like EEU, Western Europe also has two teams directly invited to the LAN event in Dubai, namely Gaimin Gladiators and Team Liquid.
