Assassin’s Creed Shadows hits two million players two days after release

The newest Assassin’s Creed game has surpassed the launches of both Origins and Odyssey.

There’s no question that the newest Assassin’s Creed game by Ubisoft is quite the hit. In fact, right after hitting the one million player-mark on day one, Assassin’s Creed Shadows surpassed the two million mark after day two. Ubisoft made the announcement on the franchise’s official X (formerly Twitter):

This also means that the game has surpassed the success of two of its predecessors, Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The record-breaking success could also be attributed to Ubisoft making the game available on Steam from Day 1, instead of waiting for a couple of years after release date, as it did with its most recent instalment, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Shadows' success is a much-needed win for Ubisoft, which had a rough year in 2024. With three blockbuster open-world titles – Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Skull & Bones, and Star Wars Outlaws – flopping upon release, a lot is on the line for this newest game.

The developer even delayed the game’s release twice. The game was originally scheduled for Fall 2024, before Ubisoft cancelled its early access period, and delayed the game by another month in 2025.

Shadows rated “Very Positive” on Steam

It seems that the delays had paid off, with the game having received glowing reviews on Steam and PlayStation 5. We shared our experience with the game in a review, where we called the game as “immersive as it is addictive.”

On Steam, the game’s average rating is "Very Positive," with many players praising its beautiful animation, solid gameplay, and interesting progression system, with some calling it the "best AC in years." Others, however, disliked the microtransactions, and complained of Steam Deck optimisation issues.

The game also hit a record high of 64,825 concurrent players on Steam, which is much higher than any other game in the franchise, including Odyssey and Origins.
