In the last week of Aghanim’s Labyrinth, we take a look at the best hero compositions for making it past Grand Magus and Apex Mage.
It has been a fun nine weeks, navigating through the different rooms of Aghanim’s Labyrinth: The Continuum Conundrum. The quest to rescue all the alternate versions of Aghanim and bringing the Primal Beast to the ground while fun, is extremely challenging for the highest difficulty tiers.
A few weeks ago, GosuGamers took a look at the best hero compositions to complete the Grand Magus and Apex Mage tiers. However, back then, not many players had made it to the top tiers and there was a smaller chance of all the heroes being available to the majority of the players. As we come to the end of the journey, there is a higher number of players trying to complete the top two difficulty tiers, and there are more heroes at their disposal for the task. So with just a week to go before Aghanim bids us adieu, we take a look at an updated version of team compositions that players favor and the ones which are most likely to overcome the Primal Beast. The stats have been taken from Stratz.com and based on the past three days of games.
Grand Magus
The image below shows the 10 most played compositions for Grand Magus. Phoenix and Undying make the cut in literally every composition of the top 10 list, but there are some interesting changes. Juggernaut and Queen of Pain are seen a lot less than before, with Clinkz making quite a few appearances. In fact, Clinkz is the third most frequent hero, seen in six compositions as compared to Juggernaut’s three and QoP’s four.
Of the 10 though, not all have a very high win rate. The two that have the best win rates are:
Clinkz-Undying-Tusk-Phoenix (21.3% win rate)
Queen of Pain-Undying-Tusk-Phoenix (19.6% win rate)
It is extremely interesting to note that Tusk appears only twice on the list, and both of those happen to be the standout performing compositions. Coincidence? Ymir probably doesn’t think so! Tusk is a pretty useful hero to have in Aghanim’s Labyrinth. The hero can output magical as well as physical damage, he can chase around pesky bosses like Earthshaker and Arc Warden who jump or teleport around, and he can save allies using Snowball. What more can you ask for?!
Coming to Clinkz, the hero makes a case for himself with AoE damage, a way to get out of murky situations and the ability to summon warriors that output damage and take away the enemies attention.
Apex Mage
Even in Apex Mage, Phoenix and Undying are seen in literally every composition. The best way to have a chance to make it past the higher difficulty tiers is to have these two in your team by default.
The two most successful compositions from the top 10 for Apex Mage are:
Juggernaut-Undying-Tusk-Phoenix (25% win rate)
With Doctor-Undying-Tusk Phoenix (17.3% win rate)
Tusk again! We are definitely beginning to see a pattern here. Tusk is one of the heroes that needs to be unlocked, so not only did he join the party a bit late, but even now, not everyone has him, which is why he isn’t seen as often as Phoenix and Undying. But it is as clear as day during Phoenix’s Supernova that the hero is a good pick in Aghanim’s Labyrinth: The Continuum Conundrum. While playing with Phoenix, it’s great to have two melee heroes in the enemies face, so that Sun Ray can heal two allies while damaging enemies.
The most preferred lineup, played a total of 177 times over the last three days in the Apex Mage tier, is Clinkz-Undying-Tusk-Phoenix. In case you’re tired of spamming Phoenix and Undying, try your hand with the Bone Fletcher or Ymir.
Like all good things, Aghanim’s Labyrinth must come to an end. It will be sad to see Aghanim go, but this time around, he was a bit too talkative, which is something that won’t be missed. Hopefully, Aghanim’s Labyrinth will be brought again next year, because this is definitely an event the Dota 2 community enjoys.
