Complexity Gaming, FlyQuest, and Passion UA fall in the final hurdle to the Elimination Stage.

BIG, MIBR, and Wildcard Gaming became the last three teams to qualify for the Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 Elimination Stage after they emerged victorious in round five of the tournament's Opening Stage on Tuesday (December 4).Complexity Gaming, FlyQuest, and Passion UA didn't make the cut and have been eliminated.

Here's how all the action in the fourth and final day of the CS2 Perfect World Shanghai Major Opening Stage went down:

BIG, MIBR, and Wildcard claim last three spots in Elimination Stage

The day started with a showdown with BIG and Complexity. BIG notably finished the Shanghai Major's European Regional Major Ranking (RMR) B event with a 3-0 record, which would have directly given them a spot in the Elimination Stage.

However, miscommunication between CS2 developer Valve Software and organiser Perfect World Esports resulted in a debacle that caused confusion on whether certain teams would be granted direct spots in the Elimination Stage. In the end, the Valve Regional Standing (VRS) system was used to determine where certain teams would be seeded in the Shanghai Major.

As a result, BIG had to play through the Opening Stage and could have missed out on the Elimination Stage spot they apparently earned in the RMR, had they lost to Complexity. Things seemed to be headed that way after Complexity won the first map of the series at Anubis, 13-5, in dominant fashion.

Fortunately for BIG, they managed to rally in the next two maps and score back-to-back 13-9 wins in Ancient and Dust II to once again earn a spot in the Elimination Stage. Complexity failing to make it out of the Opening Stage also meant that Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski will not make the Top 16 of a Major for the first time since 2017.

The second series of the day then saw MIBR soundly sweep FlyQuest in Nuke (13-4) and Inferno (13-5) to make it to the Elimination Stage. With MIBR advancing, three out of four Brazilian teams in the Opening Stage have also qualified for the Elimination Stage, with only Imperial Esports not making the cut after getting eliminated in day two

The Shanghai Major Opening Stage then closed as Wildcard and Passion UA battled for the final spot in the Elimination Stage. Both teams won the first two maps with a 13-6 score, with Wildcard taking map one in Inferno and Passion UA claiming map two in Mirage. That then set up a win-or-go home decider at Ancient.

Passion UA were up 7-5 as the CT side after the first half, and were in control at 10-7 by round 17. However, Wildcard responded with four straight round wins and sparked a run that gave them series point at 12-11 after round 23. Passion UA were determined to advance, however, as they won round 24 to force overtime.

Passion UA seemed to have the momentum as they won the first overtime round. But Wildcard rallied once again and racked off another four-round streak to claim the 16-13 overtime win and the final spot in the Shanghai Major Elimination Stage.

With the day's results, BIG, MIBR, and Wildcard round out the list of eight teams that qualified for the Shanghai Major Elimination Stage from the Opening Stage alongside Team Liquid, The MongolZ, GamerLegion, FURIA Esports, and paiN Gaming. They will be joining the eight teams that qualified directly to the Elimination Stage from the European RMR A and B events, namely G2 Esports, Natus Vincere, Team Vitality, Team Spirit, MOUZ, FaZe Clan, HEROIC, and 3DMAX.

The Elimination Stage will take place from December 5 to 8, and will follow the same 16-team Swiss system format as the Opening Stage. The Top 8 teams in the Elimination Stage will then advance to the Playoff Stage while the rest will be eliminated.

Complexity, FlyQuest, Passion UA, Virtus.pro, Cloud9, Rare Atom, Imperial Esports, and Fnatic have all been sent packing and will take $10,000 for their efforts in the Opening Stage.

The CS2 Perfect World Shanghai Major is the second-ever Major Championship for CS2, and will feature 24 of the best teams from all across the globe gunning for the lion's share of a $1.25 million prize pool, as well as the prestigious right to be called CS2 Major champions. The tournament is split into three distinct stages: the Opening Stage from November 30 to December 3, the Elimination Stage from December 5 to 8, and the Playoff Stage from December 12 to 15.
