Gen.G Esports defeat DRX to claim VCT Pacific Stage 2 championship

With this latest victory, Gen.G continue to look like the biggest favourites to be crowned as this year's VALORANT world champions.

South Korean VALORANT juggernauts Gen.G Esports have further cemented their case as the best team in the 2024 VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) by raising their third trophy this season with a 3-1 victory over fellow South Korean squad DRX in the best-of-five grand finals of the VCT Pacific League Stage 2 Playoffs.

Gen.G's ongoing dominance over the VCT has seen them finish in the Top 2 of all tournaments they've competed in so far. They started the year by raising the trophy at the Pacific Kickoff in February, followed that up with back-to-back 2nd place finishes at Masters Madrid in March and the Pacific Stage 1 Playoffs in May, and then claimed another championship in Masters Shanghai last month.

Meanwhile, DRX have languished in their fellow South Korean team's shadow, only managing to finish 3rd-4th in the Pacific Kickoff and 4th in the Pacific Stage 1 Playoffs.

Following the Stage 2 Group Stage, DRX finished second in the league's overall standings with a 7-3 record to earn a direct bye to the upper bracket semifinals in the Stage 2 Playoffs. On the other hand, Gen.G only finished fourth with a 6-4 standing, forcing them to start the Playoffs from the Knockout Stage.

Gen.G were on fire to start the Playoffs, scoring back-to-back 2-0 sweeps over Rex Regum Qeon in the Knockout Stage and Singaporean rivals Paper Rex in the upper bracket semifinals. Meanwhile, DRX swept Talon Esports in the other upper bracket semifinal match to set up their first showdown with Gen.G in the upper bracket finals.

Gen.G emerged victorious in the upper bracket finals, 2-1, to become the first team in the grand finals and knock DRX down to the lower bracket finals to face Paper Rex. Despite losing the first two games of the lower bracket finals, DRX pulled off an incredible 3-2 reverse sweep to force a rematch with Gen.G for the Pacific Stage 2 championship.

Gen.G trounce DRX in all-Korean Pacific Stage 2 finals

DRX threw a haymaker to start the finals, racking up an incredible nine-round streak as the attacker side in the first half of game one in Haven. While Gen.G managed to answer by winning rounds 10 and 11, DRX took round 12 to head into the side switch with a dominant 10-2 lead. Gen.G showed signs of life by winning four of the first five rounds of the second half, but DRX eventually drew first blood by claiming the 13-6 win in Haven.

Game two at Bind was an absolute bloodbath that needed 34 rounds for a victor to be decided, with Gen.G walking away with the hard-fought 18-16 win.

Gen.G looked determined to tie up the series to start the map as the defender side, ending the first half up 7-5. The second half then saw both squads trade multi-round runs. DRX took rounds 13 and 14, Gen.G then won three-straight, followed by each team winning two rounds apiece to get Gen.G within match point 12-9 after round 21. However, DRX won three-straight rounds to force the map to overtime.

DRX looked like they could take a 2-0 series lead after going up 14-13 after round 27, but Gen.G then got the leg up 16-15 in round 31. DRX then won round 32 to tie things up 16-16, but a determined Gen.G managed to win the next two rounds to tie up the series at 1-1.

Game four at Lotus was another overtime affair, though it was not as close as the previous map as Gen.G emerged victorious 14-12 to take a commanding 2-1 series lead.

Gen.G had a strong start to Lotus by winning the first three rounds as the defender side. However, DRX went on a 7-2 run to close out the first half to take a two-round lead heading into the side switch. Gen.G had another strong start in the second half by winning six of the next seven rounds to go up 11-8.

DRX then turned things around by winning four-straight rounds to get within map point, 12-11, only for Gen.G to win round 24 to send force another overtime period. Gen.G then continued rolling by winning the two overtime rounds and getting to within one map away from claiming the Pacific Stage 2 championship.

Game four at Icebox saw a masterclass performance by Gen.G to close out the series and claim the Stage 2 Pacific championship. While DRX started out strong on the attacker side by winning the first three rounds, Gen.G followed up by going on a furious 7-2 run to enter the second half with a two-round lead.

Gen.G carried their momentum into the side switch, winning four-straight rounds to go up 11-5 before DRX could answer in round 17. And despite DRX's best efforts to mount a comeback, Gen.G eventually closed out Icebox with a 13-6 score for the 3-1 series victory.

With this latest victory under their belt, Gen.G will be carrying the region's hopes for that elusive first world championship at VALORANT Champions 2024 on their home soil in South Korea this August. Joining them in representing the Pacific in this year's VALORANT world championship tournament will be DRX, Paper Rex, and Talon Esports.
