A new dark horse has entered the playoffs.
In a rematch of the opening day showdown between T1 and EDward Gaming, it was EDG who came out on top this time to secure the last and final VCT Masters Tokyo playoff spot. The Chinese org has been on sensational form as of late, having first dispatched a NAVI roster that is filled with championship-winning calibre players, and more recently, sent T1 home in a clean 2-0 sweep.
T1 chose Fracture as its first map but it would be EDG who took the match by the scruff of its neck from the get-go, winning eight of the first 12 rounds of the half. EDG was unstoppable for the most part with T1 only getting four diffuses off. By the second, EDG was too far ahead and would go on to win the next five games in a row to claim game one.
In the second map, EDG chose Haven and would once again come out of the gates swinging, this time winning 10 of the first 12 rounds in a dominant display. By halftime, it was looking grim for T1, who already had one foot out the door by then. However, the Korean org was able to rally itself to a four-round win streak.
Sadly, that wasn't enough as T1 had to be perfect to not drop any more rounds against EDG. And on round 17, it all went downhill for T1 as EDG was able to win the last three rounds in a row to secure its spot in the playoffs.
It was also a particularly dominant performance from Yongkang "ZmjjKK" Zheng, who racked up an average combat score (ACS) of 305 in game one and 340 in game two. He also led the team in both games as the top fragger with 19 and 23 kills respectively across the two games.
The VCT Masters Tokyo will now take a one-day break before the start of the playoff bracket, which begins on June 16.
