[s]starcraft[/s]
We are starting a compilation of Trivia and Easter Eggs related to Starcraft. All in the community are welcomed to participate. Here is a small start.
Starcraft trivia and easter eggs for all today. Many of you will have read or seen some of them, and some almost all, not everyone knows all of them. Hopefully we have something to please everyone, both old schoolers and the new players. If you know either an easter egg or an interesing piece of trivia please post it in the forum thread I have started for this article which I hope grows on its own with the help of everyone.
WarHammer
The Zerg are based on the "Tyranids," an alien race found in the table-top-wargame "WARHAMMER 40,000" which is produced by Games Workshop. So is the Terran marine.
The Science Vessel
The game's Easter Egg also consists of some secret voices on some units, for example; The Science Vessel sounds like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons. Also, other units say funny lines, for example; Science Vessel: "Ship? Out of danger???" Once quoted by Spock in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.
Zerg Facial Features
The Zerg facial structure is derived from dental x-ray scans of human skulls.
Reaver and Anime
The Reavers may have been based on Hayao Miyazaki's, Kaze no tani no Naushika (1984), thus his credit at the end of the game.
Drop Ship and ALien the movie
When you click on the dropship unit, all of its responses are from the movie Aliens (1986).
Repeat Click
1. Click on a hero, unit or critter.
2. Click on them continiously whether they hero's critters or units and you will hear many funny responces. Two examples:
Remember the Witch in Diablo? Click on the Arbiter. Click on it many times ''I sence a soul in search on answers.''
Clicking on Lieutenant Duran results in this dialogue: "My name is Duran" "I already told you my name it's Duran, DURAN!" "What's so funny?" "Please, please tell me now..." "... is there something I should know?"
The last two comments are actually the first line of the chorus from the Duran Duran song - "There Something I Should Know?"
Sinatra
One of Brood War's heroes - Artanis can be read backwards as a singer Sinatra.
Hidden Zerg Song
1. Go into a zerg single player campaing
2. Once playing push enter and type: Radio Free Zerg
3. Push enter and a techno-song will begin to play titled "Serve the Hive"
Recipe for Chinese Lemon Chicken
1. Go to the first Terran Mission
2. Wait a long long time.
3. And you will see the recipe
Diablo Sounds
Find a Protoss Observer that you control.
Keep clicking on it.
Soon you will hear some of the characters from diablo speak in the static.
Aliens and Starcraft
Several of the funny sayings you get when continuously clicking on a unit are from the film Aliens. For example: the terran marine will say "How do I get out of this chickenshit outfit" a line Bill Paxton said in the movie. Also, the dropship pilot looks and talks just like the pilot from Aliens and issues a couple of sayings directly from the film: "Were in the pipe, 5 by 5," and "Strap yourselves in boys, we're in for some chops." Several Blizzard games give subtle tributes to science fiction films such as Aliens, Blade Runner and The Terminator. (In Diablo, Cain the Elder's real name is Deckard, a tribute to Blade Runner)
Fahrenheit 451 reference
If you have read the book Fahrenheit 451 you know that the main book-burner's name is Guy Montag. In Starcraft the main firebat's name is Gui (a different version of Guy) Montag, need a light?
Anime References
There are quite a bit of Japanese animation references in Starcraft. One obvious one is the Protoss Reaver, which looks and talks very much like an Ohmu, a giant bug creature seen in the movie "Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind".
In the map editor, certain heroes are listed with the names "Yggdrasil" and "Allen Shezarade". Yggdrasil was the name of God's computer in the "Ah! My Goddess" comic, and Allen Shezarade was a knight in the "Escaflowne" TV series. I guess Blizzard employees are into anime and it also explains some of the obscure credits they give in the credit section.
Hidden Credits
1) Go to the menu screen (right after the game finishes loading)
2) Leave the cursor over Single, Multiplayer, or Campaign Editor.
3) Some of the words that appear aren't really words, but names of the members of the Starcraft Team.
Neat stuff
Top Gun movie reference
Go to the campaign editor section of the game and check the Terran heros section. Tom Kazansky is the name of the Wraith hero. Tom Kazansky is also the "iceman"'s real name from the movie Top Gun.
400 units bug
Getting 400 Max Units. First get 200 marines to go attack the enemiy base, must get exactly 200 Marines. Destroy ONLY one of the enemy pylon, overlord or supply depot. Then let the enemy kill and destroy all the marines. DO not let them (the marines) destroy anything else because it will mess up the code. Let them stand there and allow the computer opponent to devour them. Then go back and you can get 400 max.
Hidden Level
Complete Zerg Expansion Mission 9, "The Reckoning", in twenty minutes or less. Note that if you use the "There is no cow level" cheat to win instantly, you will not be able to access the hidden level. The text "Hidden Level Activated" should appear in the bottom left corner of the play field, above your mini map. Instead of Zerg Mission 10, the next level you play will be the hidden level, where you play as a Protoss scout force. The hidden level will not appear in the mission select screen. You will have to unlock it every time you want to play it. (broodwar only)
Nuke the Neutral Unit
In Starcraft, if you click on almost any neutral ground unit (Kakaru, Rhyadon, Scantid, Ursadon, Bangalass, Or Ragnasaur) 50 times, without clicking on anything else or deselecting it, it will blow up like a nuke. This is very similar to what happens in Warcraft II when you click on a neutral unit.
Nearby units will not be affected. Does it work for neutral air unit in Starcraft: Brood War?
Go on, be a newbie! I do not know about you but those were the days I had most fun with this game. Now 5 minutes into any 1v1 game, I am pretty sure of the outcome of the game by judging my opponent's skill. This takes away that marvellous feeling of new game. Now when I started playing even though I joined a public game knowing I was going to be cremated, deep down I always had hope and I was not dead until my bunker died.
Do not forget to post in our forums if you have a special easter egg or interesting trivia not mentioned above.
