Melty eSports Club convincingly wins Overwatch Weekly EU #1

Today we finally kicked off our Weekly Tournaments for Overwatch. The European server had the pleasure of kicking off what will be a long series of events.

GosuGamers was quick to start preparations for Overwatch events after the closed beta was announced. We learned from some of the first events on the scene, like SombreroGG's or Fishstix', and made sure we put all of our previous eSports experience to good use. And we believe this showed in today's Overwatch tournament. The first tournament of many more to come, the EU server was home to a lot of amazing matches for a few hours.

As shown in the bracket, some pretty big organizations/teams signed up for the $120 USD prize pool. But a lot of unknown teams are making good use of the opportunity; we filled up the 16 spots faster than expected! After a few hours of great games, some of which casted by ZP_TV and Hexagrams on the Twitch.TV/GosuGamers channel, Melty eSports Club and Eccentric Gaming were left for the final series.

While Eccentric Gaming might be unknown to most teams, Melty eSports already made somewhat of a name for themselves after winning the AlphaCast EU tournament. The dominance they showed in that tournament was also clearly visible in today's matches. They managed to keep all their opponents from even finishing a map as offense, let alone do it in a fastest way. And everybody was expecting this to continue until the finals, which it did.

The Grand Finals

After what seemed like a solid start for Eccentric on Dorado, Melty managed to stall the payload long enough before one of the checkpoints to deny Eccentric the time extension required to finish the game. Melty, on the other hand, had no problem at all getting up to that specific checkpoint, which by Stopwatch rules gave them the win of the first set right there. The second set of games was played on King's Row, which proved to be the most popular map today. Eccentric was again allowed to start on offensive and quickly (and surprisingly) took control of the first capture point. This moment in the game was one of the highlights for Eccentric, a moment when it seemed like they could possibly at least finish a map on offense against Melty eSports Club. But Melty took control of the match again, and prevented EG from reaching their next check point. Melty on offense was even scarier. A triple tank composition of Winston, Reinhardt and D.Va allowed Melty to overrun Eccentric in the early game, and their clear superior grasp of the game at this point allowed them to cruise to victory fairly effortless.

Melty eSports Club therefore won the first Overwatch Weekly on the EU server, which was watched by over 1,000 concurrent viewers and their performance even allowed them to rise to the first spot on our rankings, which are of course still very basic at this point but will get stronger and more accurate with every week of events.

Be sure to check out the GosuGamers Twitch Channel tomorrow, when we will be kicking off our Weekly Tournament on the NA server! For more information, including how to register, be sure to check out this article.
