The first day of WCG action ended with some surprising results as group favorites like Idra, Socke, Elfi, Happy, and SEn all failed to qualify for the Round of 16. China performed extremely well and both Xigua and F91 enjoyed successes in the group stage.
Group A saw Moonglade rise to his former glory as the Australian walked out with a dominating 5-1 score, falling only to Socke. Unfortunately, the latter could not make it to the Ro16 as even though he was equal in sets with F91, the direct loss from earlier cast him out of the tournament.
Among the most notable upsets in Group A was the defeat ot SEn. The Taiwanese fell victim to the Best of 1 format which was even harsher with the zerg mirrors. With losses to group leaders F91 and Moonglade (and a third one to Socke), SEn had to pack his bags and head home. Same went for IEM Guangzhou finalist Elfi, who is also out with a 3-3 score.
Xigua left absolutely no chance to the contenders in group B, coming out with a perfect 6-0. Eventually, the group came to a three-way tiebreaker between Happy, Kas and Welmu and the Ukrainian managed to score two victories to crawl his way up to the top two.
Analogical was the situation in group C with Mvp reasserting his title of South Korean champion and one of the best players in the world by ravishing his way up to a 6-0 top one spot. The top two spot was once again a matter of a tie-breaker debate between Goody, Aristeo and Cytoplasm which was eventually won by the German terran.
Group D was the doom of another tournament favorite - Idra. The EG zerg scored a quick first win against Titan only to be defeated three times in a row by Orly, Capoch and Killer putting him in an impossible to advance situation.
Instead, the group was topped by Russian protoss Titan, who went on a killing spree after his first loss, finiship up with a 5-1 score. Killer's story was written a similar end: 5-1 in sets with a loss only to the group leader.
