M5 World Championship: AP.Bren reign supreme in 2023

Having battled across the Land of Dawn for the entirety of 2023, AP.Bren has claimed the M5 World Championship title for themselves.

On November 23, 2023, the journey began for eight teams in the Wildcard Tournament, as they ventured forth in an attempt to make it through to the M5 World Championship main event. While only two teams would reach the hallowed grounds from this, they joined another fourteen who were ready to fight in the Philippines for the chance to call themselves the best. Today, all of that hard work came to an end, as the champions were crowned in an epic grand final between AP.Bren and ONIC Esports.

PH remains on top of the world

Chaos reigned within the Land of Dawn today, as two of the best Mobile Legends: Bang Bang teams in the world went head-to-head in an attempt to become the champions of M5. Having only dropped two games in the entire M5 so far, which came at the hands of Blacklist International on the first day of the Knockout Stage, and having demolished Bren in the Upper Bracket Finals, ONIC seemed an easy bet to take the title this year – but Bren would never let it go without a fight. Opening with a Thamuz pick, and the audience behind them, Bren took control, claiming an early lead before Kairi “Kairi” Ygnacio Rayosdelsol's Joy equalised things.

Most watching expected this to be the point where ONIC turned everything around, especially with the likes of Kairi picking up Hayabusa in one of the following games. However, no matter what they threw at AP.Bren, they seemed to have absolutely no way to crack the Hive. Bren, having gone down to the ID team once already, was not about to let it happen again, as they channelled the home-ground advantage to pummel them down into submission. However, nothing was over until the very end, and as always in MLBB, anything can happen – and ONIC’s resilience came through.

Spectacularly, ONIC bounced back over the next two games, setting the grand finals on a knife’s edge as it went the full seven-game distance. With a best-of-one now left to decide the champion, ONIC got off to a hot start, claiming a strong early game lead in kills, but the PH team kept themselves in contention via objectives. By the time the game had reached 11 minutes, Bren had complete control of the map, zoning ONIC out from everything, and not allowing them to find any decent farming opportunities. It was only 3-minutes later that Bren found their opening and closed out the series with a 4-3 win.

With that, AP.Bren claimed a superb M5 World Championship victory, becoming the first organisation to secure two wins in the M-Series. The team walks away with their share of the $900,000 prize pool, as well as the knowledge that they keep PH as the most dominant region in the MLBB world. For ONIC, they would have to settle for second place, as both teams now look ahead to the MPL’s next season in 2024.
