MPL PH Season 12: An emotional ending for two teams on Day 1 of the playoffs

MPL PH Season 12 playoffs kicked off today with two huge elimination series, which saw both ONIC Esports and Omega Esports exit the tournament on Day 1.

One last Mobile Legends Professional League tournament stood in the way of us and the real countdown to the M5 World Championship beginning – with the Philippines seeing the culmination of Season 12 over the next five days. Day 1 would see two massive best-of-five series, both of which would result in elimination for the losing teams. Blacklist International, ONIC Philippines, Omega Esports, and RSG Philippines were the four teams to play, with ECHO and AP.Bren waiting in the next round for their challengers.

It is ONIC time no more

Opening up at MPL PH Season 12 playoffs would be Blacklist and ONIC, two teams that were once at the pinnacle of the region all the way back at Season 8. With a best-of-five series on the cards, these two teams threw everything that they had at one another – taking us the full distance. While it was The Agents who were quick off the mark, ONIC responded in turn, even allowing the Nolan through to their opponents when they tied the series.

The next two games would be fiercely contested once more, with ONIC showing their resilience with a smart move to counter Sensui’s Popol and Kupa Jungle snowball attempts. However, going into one final game, ONIC could no longer withstand the force of Blacklist, eventually falling to an unfortunate 2-3 loss. With that, another fifth/sixth place for ONIC ends their MPL PH Season 12, while Blacklist moves on to face the daunting task of ECHO in the next round.

Omega’s final stand

Next to head out into the Land of Dawn would be RSG PH and Omega Esports, with the once Kingslayers looking to return to their former glory in the region. While the previous series was extremely well-fought between the two teams, this one was completely one-sided, with RSG dominating from start to finish. There was nothing very special from the drafts of RSG, but they man-handled the Barangay, ripping them apart at every turn.

It was an emotional loss for Omega Esports, who were eventually swept aside by RSG in a 3-0 sweep, as they exited yet another MPL PH playoff in fifth/sixth place. For RSG PH, the pathway forward was now open, and it would be AP.Bren awaiting them in the next round of the playoffs.

With that, the first day of the MPL PH Season 12 playoffs comes to an end, with only four teams remaining in the event. Tomorrow will see a return to the Land of Dawn, as the two upper bracket finalists are decided before Friday brings us another elimination before the weekend action culminates in the grand finals on Sunday.
