Worlds 2024 Semifinals Preview: Weibo vs BLG and Gen.G vs T1

It's a battle filled with deep rivalries in the semifinals at Worlds 2024.

As the dust settles on the battlegrounds of the League of Legends World Championship 2024, only four teams remain standing, each poised to claim their legacy.

In one semifinal, China’s powerhouse, LPL's first seed Bilibili Gaming, are set to face Weibo Gaming, the LPL's fourth seed.

Across the Rift, the LCK’s second seed but undisputed top team all season, Gen.G, prepare for yet another iconic showdown against the storied fourth seed, T1. The stakes have never been higher; regional pride, years of rivalry, and a ticket to the ultimate showdown hang in the balance.

Here’s a breakdown of the matches as the world’s best teams push toward an epic showdown in the grand finals.

Weibo Gaming vs Bilibili Gaming

The rivalry between Weibo Gaming and Bilibili Gaming has become one of the fiercest in recent years, marked by a series of high-stakes clashes and intense competition. Since 2022, these two giants have clashed in 35 games, with BLG walking away with a staggering 23 wins.

In 2024, BLG only sharpened their fangs, defeating Weibo in every single encounter. Out of their 10 matches this year, BLG didn’t drop a game, sweeping both Bo5 series with commanding 3-0s, leaving Weibo trailing in their wake.

Weibo came into this season with high hopes, with mid laner Li "Xiaohu" Yuan-Hao in charge, and adding powerhouse players Breathe and Tarzan to bolster their ranks, but they have struggled to counter BLG’s relentless playstyle.

BLG, meanwhile, built a fortress-like roster with star mid laner Zhuo "knight" Ding and one of the world's best top laners Chen “Bin” Ze-Bin, elevating their game to an untouchable level in the LPL.

Yet history has shown that Weibo can be unpredictable at Worlds. Fans remember last year’s sensational semifinals, where Weibo defied all odds and took down BLG in a nail-biting 3-2 series.

This year at Worlds, both teams found themselves on the brink of elimination with 1-2 standings in the Swiss Stage but managed to survive and qualify for the Knockout stage, where Weibo Gaming pulled off an upset with another strong LPL team, LNG Esports 3-1, while BLG looked unstoppable defeating LCK first seed Hanwha Life Esports 3-1.

Could Weibo pull off another miracle in 2024? Or will BLG exact revenge and stamp their ticket to the final? The weight of an entire region rests on the outcome.

Gen.G vs T1

Few rivalries in League of Legends history hold the weight of Gen.G and T1—a clash so iconic, that each encounter feels like a grand finale. Since 2020, these two titans have faced off in nearly 100 games, crafting a rivalry that grows more intense with every win and loss.

Since the Summer of 2022, Gen.G have been T1’s Kryptonite, consistently taking domestic titles and finally achieving their first international victory at the 2024 Mid-Season Invitational, where T1 placed third.

This dominance has persisted, with Gen.G defeating T1 in every head-to-head matchup this year, including a tense 3-2 victory in the Spring Finals. Now, in 2024, Gen.G sit at the summit, with T1 relentlessly pursuing.

Gen.G's roster is a powerhouse, featuring one of the world’s best junglers, 2020 World Champion Kim "Canyon" Geon-bu, alongside elite support player Son "Lehends" Si-woo and their standout mid-laner and face of the team since 2022, Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon.

Though Hanwha Life Esports blocked their ambitions for a “golden road” to victory in the Summer Finals, Gen.G roared back in the Swiss Stage, before ultimately avoiding an upset by FlyQuest 3-2 in a nail-biting quarterfinals series.

However, Gen.G’s track record on the international stage has often faltered under pressure—a stage where T1 traditionally excels.

After years of near-misses and heartaches, T1 claimed the Summoner’s Cup in 2023, raising it in front of their home crowd. Yet, 2024 has been a rollercoaster, with T1 fighting to secure the LCK's fourth seed in a season marked by highs and lows.

Still, T1’s core—Choi "Zeus" Woo-je, Moon "Oner" Hyeon-ju, the legendary Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok, Lee "Gumayusi" Min-hyeong, and Ryu "Keria" Min-seok—remain determined to prove their mettle.

Even T1’s jungler, Oner, admitted he didn't want to meet Gen.G at the semfinals, but promised to give his best to “give fans a match to remember.” With Faker leading the charge, T1’s desire to turn the tide against their greatest rivals is stronger than ever.

Will T1 finally break the cycle and conquer the team that has repeatedly halted them? Or will Gen.G shatter their Worlds curse and march toward the Summoner’s Cup, unshaken and unstoppable?
