With their win, G2 Esports are now confirmed as the LEC first seed at Worlds 2024.
The League of Legends European Championship (LEC) Summer Playoffs has concluded with G2 Esports claiming the Summer Championship title after sweeping Fnatic, 3-0, in the LEC Summer Playoffs Grand Finals on Sunday (28 July).
This victory confirms G2 as the first LEC representative at Worlds 2024 while also marking the European powerhouse’s 15th regional championship title.
G2 had a relatively solid run throughout the playoffs, sweeping Karmine Corp and Team BDS en route to the upper bracket finals where they faced Fnatic in a best-of-five. However, Fnatic emerged victorious at the upper bracket final outlasting G2 3-2 to make it to the grand finals. Meanwhile, G2 took a detour and dropped to the lower bracket finals, where they took down Team BDS 3-1 to make it to the Grand Final.
G2 sweep a crumbling Fnatic
The first game was a bloodbath, with both teams exchanging kills and objectives across the map. However, G2 capitalised on key opportunities in team fights, ultimately gaining the upper hand and demolishing the enemy Nexus in a 35-minute victory.
In the second game, Fnatic largely stuck to their draft strategy, making only a slight change by swapping their bot lane for Ezreal and Rell. Meanwhile, G2 added a twist to their draft, opting for a combination of tanks and damage dealers which include: Ornn top, Brand jungle, Corki mid, and Jhin with Nautilus in the bottom lane.
Fnatic gained an early to mid-game lead, but G2 managed to catch up and surpass them in the late game. After a 34-minute battle, G2 pushed into Fnatic’s base, destroyed the Nexus, and secured the second game.
There weren’t many changes to Fnatic’s draft in the third game, however, they opted for squishier champions like Lucian mid, and Brand in the jungle. They then took Renekton top and Ezreal and Leona to the bottom lane.
G2 also had minor tweaks to their drafts, taking Ornn Top, Zyra jungle, Corki mid, and Kais'a and Nautilus in the bottom lane.
Fnatic found an advantage early in the game and snowballed their lead up to 8,000 gold. However, G2 caught up slowly and eventually overtook their opponents, destroying their Nexus after a 29-minute battle to win the third game and the series.
With their win, G2 are taking home €40,000 or approximately US $43,166 and qualifying for the LEC Season Finals. They have also secured a spot at the 2024 League of Legends World Championship, becoming the LEC’s first seed.
Meanwhile, Fnatic bow out of the competition in 2nd place, and are taking home €25,000 or approximately US $26,979. They have also qualified for the LEC Season Finals, where they will compete against SK Gaming, GIANTX, and Team BDS for a slot at Worlds, and for the LEC Season Finals title.
