Esports World Cup: Top Esports make it to finals after 2-0 sweep against G2 Esports

Top Esports are facing T1 in the Grand Finals on Sunday (7 July).

The League of Legends Esports World Cup semifinals won’t be complete with the last semifinals clash between LPL team Top Esports (TES) and LEC first seed G2 Esports.

In the end, Top Esports emerged victorious, sweeping G2 with a decisive 2-0 win.

Top Esports came into the tournament as heavy underdogs against tournament favourites and Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) champions Gen.G

However, in an unexpected turn of events, Top Esports upset Gen.G in a dominant 2-0 sweep to make it to the semifinals.

Now at the EWC semifinals, Top Esports took every opportunity to exact revenge against G2 for their MSI Playoffs loss in May.

Meanwhile, G2 outplayed North American team FlyQuest 2-1 at the quarterfinals to make it to the semifinals.

Here’s how the semifinals match went.

In the first game, both Top Esports and G2 kept a nearly equal footing, with the Chinese team gaining only a slight gold advantage. G2 tried to catch up with more kills across the map, however Top Esports maintained the upper hand with map control and grew their gold lead through it.

After breaking open G2’s top lane, Top Esports pushed forward and placed pressure on g2 on all sides. After a 28-minute encounter and a 13-9 kill lead, Top Esports destroyed G2’s Nexus to win the first game.

The laning phase of the second game looked similar, but this time, with TES and G2 dead even in gold, kills, and even map objectives.

However, as the game continued, the Chinese team found opportunities to outplay their European opponents and eventually take the upper hand toward the mid game.G2 continued to bleed out and fall behind, with TES bent on giving their opponent no chance to recover. With a 10,000 gold lead, the Chinese team started to overpower G2 in team fights and skirmishes.

After a 26-minute encounter, Top Esports destroyed G2’s Nexus to win the second game and claim the grand finals spot.

Top Esports will face T1 at the grand finals on Sunday (7 July).

Meanwhile, G2 Esports bowed out of the competition in 3rd-4th place and take home $100,000 in consolation.
