FlyQuest mark their MSI debut with a win over PSG Talon on the opening day.
The first day of the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 couldn't have got off to a better start than with FlyQuest coming from behind to defeat PSG Talon 2-1 in the opening series. That win now puts FQ in the upper bracket final of its respective group where they are just one more victory away from qualifying to the Bracket Stage.
However, they will first have to wait for the winner from the next series between Estral ESports and T1. As for PSG, they now drop to the lower bracket where they will have to win two more best-of-threes in order to still qualify to the next round. Despite winning the first map, PSG could not close out the series against FQ, who managed to pick themselves back up to complete the comeback.
It was a tightly-fought game one between FQ and PSG with the former having the advantage of a fully-farmed Yu-Hung “Betty” Lu on Senna. He was able to get nine of PSG's 13 total kills, which goes to show how well he carried the team in the late game. But this doesn't mean that FQ were horrible; both Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau and Fahad “Massu” Abdulmalek were able to keep it a close match with positive KDAs despite the loss.
And it was in game two where both Bwipo and Massu stepped up for the team once again. Bwipo stuck with Urgot for the second game in a row and popped off with 10 kills, seven assists, and zero deaths. Massu's Lucian was also another thorn in PSG's side all game long with his seven kills, nine assists, and just two deaths. The young AD carry looked unfazed being on the main stage of his first-ever international tournament and he proved just why in the third and final match.
His Varus was able to not only get space and time to farm but was also taking part in plenty of skirmishes against PSG. He would end the match with 10 kills, eight assists, and just two deaths once more. But it was his midlaner, Nicolaj “Jensen” Jensen who was the team's catalyst to winning the third match. Known for his Orianna, the seasoned veteran at only his second MSI event was able to secure nine kills to go with his 10 assists and a singular death.
But it was his quadra to kill the game for FQ that truly stamped the team's performance so far at MSI 2024. They may be the LCS second seed, but given how they handled themselves versus PSG, it wouldn't be surprising to see them at least take a map off of T1 (provided they win) or even win the series against Estral (provided they win) in a few days time.
