Ben Wilinofsky Wins EPT Berlin

Canadian Ben Wilinofsky wins the €5,300 buy-in EPT Berlin main event. He defeated German Maximillian Heinzelmann heads-up.

There were 458 entrants on day 1B, added to Day 1A's 315 entrants making a 773 player field with 353 playing on Day 2. A prize pool of €3,865,000 has been created by the field, with the top 120 finishers getting paid. The winner will take home €825,000.

Many in the press were watching to see if the Swede Martin Jacobson, who was on his third EPT final table this year, could finally win, but unfortunately for Jacobsen, the third time was not lucky this time around, settling for fourth place for €230,000.

Heads-up, Wilinofsky had a 3-1 chip lead, but some good hands for his German opponent almost leveled the match when the final hand occurred.

Heinzelmann check-raised the Canadian all-in on a 8s 5c 3d flop. Wilinofsky tanked for a while and after a long pause he made the call with the words "it's sick, because I'm ahead of some of the hands that you'd do this with".

Then he revealed 7d 6h for an open-ended straight draw.

Heinzelmann had flopped top pair showing 9h 8d. The turn improved both players' hand as it fell 9s, giving Wilinofsky the nuts but a chance for Heinzelmann to river a full house.

The river, however, was Jh, securing the young Canadian the title and €825,000 in prize money.

Final table results:

1st - Ben Wilinofsky, Canada, €825,000
2nd - Maximilian Heinzelmann, Germany, €500,000
3rd - Vadzim Kursevich, Belarus, €300,000
4th - Martin Jacobson, Sweden, €230,000
5th - Armin Mette, Germany, €180,000
6th - Darren Kramer, South Africa, €140,000

7th - Joep van den Bijgaart, Holland, €100,000
8th - Jonas Gutteck, Germany, €66,000

The next European Poker Tour stop is at the popular San Remo, Italy location that Liv Boeree won last year. It will run April 27-May 3.
