Kingdom Hearts IV shows signs of life with new screenshots, mobile game cancelled

Kingdom Hearts IV is still coming, but Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link is dead.

Square Enix has officially cancelled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. The mobile game was set to feature a campaign set between Kingdom Hearts Union X and Kingdom Hearts Dark Road, but was axed this week as the publisher determined it would be “difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time.”

However, it’s not all bad news for Kingdom Hearts fans. The game publisher also confirmed that Kingdom Hearts IV is very much still in development with a host of new in-game screenshots, which you can view below:

Kingdom Hearts IV gets a development update

Square Enix has delivered an update on Kingdom Hearts IV, which has shown few signs of life since its original reveal in 2022. It has now been five long years since the release of Kingdom Hearts III, and fans have become understandably antsy for updates on the game.

This week, Square Enix released a collage of in-game screenshots from the game to assure fans that development is still underway. The screenshots aren’t very telling, but they do include glimpses of various in-game locations, character models, and combat gameplay. A Japanese post also includes a slightly different version of the first image:

Square Enix also reassured players that Kingdom Hearts IV is coming along nicely in a social media post, saying that it’s “currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts IV and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development. We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations!

“We’ve seen how excited you are, and we are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts. We are equally excited and can’t wait to share more about Kingdom Hearts IV when the time is right. Until then, we appreciate your patience.”

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link gets axed

Square Enix also confirmed that Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link has been cancelled. The game was originally announced alongside Kingdom Hearts IV, with a campaign set in Scala ad Caelum. The publisher stated that it wanted to “convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service.

"Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.”

The publisher apologised for having “to make this announcement” and assured fans that “the Kingdom Hearts series will continue.”
