Monster Hunter Wilds is now the fastest Capcom game to reach that huge milestone.

Monster Hunter Wilds – the latest mainline entry in Capcom's classic Monster Hunter series – has surpassed eight million copies sold across all platforms just three days after its 28 February release date, Capcom announced on Tuesday (4 March). With this explosive release, Monster Hunter Wilds is now also the fastest title to reach that milestone in Capcom's history.

While player numbers for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are not publicly available, Monster Hunter Wilds hit over 1.3 million concurrent players on Steam mere hours after its release. According to SteamDB, Monster Hunter Wilds holds the fifth-highest all-time concurrent player count at 1.38 million, and was even a significant factor in Steam setting a record-breaking concurrent player count of 40 million last Sunday (2 March).

The game's staggering launch numbers on Steam notably dwarfed the peak concurrent player counts of the series' two previous titles, with Monster Hunter World peaking at over 334,000 and Monster Hunter Rise at over 231,000.

Monster Hunter Wilds' record-setting release numbers are made even more impressive when considering the game launched with significant performance and optimisation issues across multiple platforms. On Steam, Monster Hunter Wilds currently has a positive review rating of 53%, with the rating even falling below 50% shortly after its release. Most reviewers cited problems with running the game smoothly as the reason behind their negative reviews, instead of issues with the game's content itself.

What is Monster Hunter Wilds?

Monster Hunter Wilds is the latest mainline entry to Capcom's classic Monster Hunter series, which started all the way back in 2004 with the titular first entry. In Monster Hunter Wilds, players will take on the role of the Hunter of the Avis Unit, tasked with leading an expedition in the Forbidden Lands. The region was previously thought uninhabited, but actually hosts multiple tribes living amidst the ruins of a long-gone civilisation. The Hunter will also be helping a boy named Nata reunite with his tribe after an attack by a mysterious monster called the ‘White Wraith’ caused him to become marooned in the Forbidden Lands' border desert regions.

As one would expect from a game called Monster Hunter, players will be hunting monsters of all shapes and sizes, ranging from the oversized frog monster ‘Chatacabra’, and a flying wyvern named ‘Rey Dau’ that shoots lightning out of its railgun-shaped head, to colossal behemoths like ‘Jin Dahaad’.

The Hunter can make use of 14 different weapon classes, namely the Long Sword, Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, Hammer, Hunting Horn, Lance, Gunlance, Switch Axe, Charge Blade, Insect Glaive, Bow, Light Bowgun, and Heavy Bowgun. Players can also explore the wilderness of the Forbidden Lands atop their raptor-like ‘Seikret’ mount and will be accompanied in hunts by an adorable Palico, a bipedal cat creature from a species called ‘Felynes’ that assists hunters in battle.

While Monster Hunter Wilds already offers tons of content for players at launch, the game also has plenty of exciting additions coming soon. The game's first free Title Update is set to be released in early April and will feature the returning monster Mizutsune, an online Gathering Hub, and more challenging endgame content.

According to Monster Hunter Wilds' initial free Title Update Roadmap, the game's second free Title Update will come in the Summer. It will feature more Event Quests plus a new as-yet unnamed monster.

Monster Hunter Wilds launched globally on 28 February, 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
