Steam sets new record by breaking 40 million concurrent users for the first time

It just so happens that Monster Hunter Wilds launched over the weekend, too.

Steam has broken records by achieving an all-time high of concurrent users. On 2 March, 2025 last weekend, Valve saw over 40 million users hop onto its PC gaming storefront at once. Of those users, 12 million of them were actively playing games on Steam. Steam’s concurrent users have been steadily climbing over the last few years, but this marks an all-time high for the platform, signalling that PC gaming as a whole still has plenty of room to grow.

Steam achieves all-new concurrent user record

Valve’s PC gaming platform Steam is rapidly growing its user base. In December 2024, the platform broke its concurrent user record with a total of 39.2 million users using Steam at the same time. This week, Steam has broken that record once again, with over 40,259,284 players logging into the platform on 2 March, 2025.

There are a few reasons behind Steam’s rapid growth in users, if we’re going to speculate. The most likely of them is that the platform is simply experiencing the advantages that come with a constantly growing pool of PC gamers, most of whom tend to favour Steam as their primary storefront. 12 million users were actively playing games on 2 March, 2025, after all–out of those 40.2 million concurrent users.

Of course, one can’t ignore the massive launch of Monster Hunter Wilds over the weekend. Capcom’s new open-world Monster Hunter game launched on 28 February, and soon after achieved 1.3 million concurrent players on the platform. Counter-Strike 2 came close to breaking its all-time concurrent player peak of 1.8 million over the weekend, as well. However, the title fell just shy, with a still-impressive 1,751,214 concurrent player count.

Steam Next Fest ends on 4 March at 2 AM SGT, and you can find five of our favourite game demos from the event here.
