Monster Hunter Wilds announces return of Mizutsune in first free Title Update in Spring

Monster Hunter Wilds' highly-anticipated release is still over two weeks away, but Capcom has already revealed its plans for the game's post-launch content.

While there are still over two weeks to go before Monster Hunter Wilds launches on 28 February, developer Capcom already revealed its plans to add more post-release content to the game for free. Monster Hunter Wilds' first free Title Update is set to arrive in Spring, and will feature returning fan-favourite monster Mizutsune.

First appearing in Monster Hunter Generations, Mizutsune is a Leviathan-class monster known for its long, slender body that is adorned with fish-like scales, tufts of fur, and fin-like appendages. This monster is also able to secrete a soapy fluid that coats its entire body, which lets it gracefully slide across terrain to avoid attacks from Hunters and other monsters. It can also fire pressurized jets of water from its mouth and breathe out bubbles, which hinders the movement of any unfortunate creatures caught in them.

Aside from Mizutsune, Monster Hunter Wilds' Spring Title Update will also include new Event Quests and other additional updates. According to Monster Hunter Wilds' initial free Title Update Roadmap, the game's second free Title Update will come in the Summer and feature more Event Quests plus a new as-yet unnamed monster.

Monster Hunter Wilds revealed Mizutsune's impending arrival with its Spring Title Update alongside the premiere of its Launch Trailer.

While Monster Hunter Wilds' Launch Trailer didn't reveal any more new monsters, it did give players a better look at the Apex monster of the Iceshard Cliffs locale that briefly appeared in the Iceshard Cliffs trailer. This massive beast, called Jin Dahaad, has a similar body plan to that of Leviathan-class monsters, and the entirety of its form is lined by numerous horn-like structures. Interestingly enough, Jin Dahaad's horned silhouette seems to be one of those seen in Monster Hunter Wilds' logo.

We only got a quick glimpse at Jin Dahaad in the trailer, but what we've seen so far seems to show the massive beast unleashing huge gusts of frosty wind from vents along its body. Given that it is the Apex monster of the Iceshard Cliffs, Jin Dahaad seems set to be a powerful Ice-type monster.

Monster Hunter Wilds' Launch Trailer also featured an interesting scene that showed an unusual Rathalos with peculiar markings on its body. These markings are eerily similar to those seen in the game's flagship monster, Arkveld. This may be a tease of Arkveld's role in the game's story as well as its mechanic for buffed monsters, similar to the Tempered Monsters of Monster Hunter World.

If you're just as excited for the release of Monster Hunter Wilds as we are, then the game's second open beta test period can help tide you over until 28 February. Monster Hunter Wilds' second open beta will continue on 13 February, 7pm PT (14 February, 11am SGT) and will end on 16 February, 6:59pm PT (17 February, 10:59am SGT).

The game's first open beta test took place from 31 October to 4 November last year, notably pulling record-breaking numbers on Steam despite some graphics issues.

Just like in the first open beta, Monster Hunter Wilds' second open beta test will let players play through the first few hours of the game's story and participate in hunts in the Windward Plains locale. But this time around, the returning monster Gypceros will also be available to hunt, alongside the likes of newcomers Chatacabra, Doshaguma, Balahara, and Rey Dau.

Monster Hunter Wilds will be released globally on 28 February, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
