2024 was great, but there are even more fantastic video games waiting to be played in 2025.
The dawn of a new year brings with it plenty of new video games to play, and 2025 is no different. From the long-awaited release of Rockstar Games’ open-world crime game Grand Theft Auto 6, to Capcom’s latest mainline entry in its Monster Hunter franchise, Monster Hunter Wilds, players have no shortage of new games to completely lose themselves in next year. These games may make for a very long list, but never fear - the writers at GosuGamers have handpicked our favourites of the bunch.
Here are our most anticipated games of 2025:
Monster Hunter Wilds
Release date: February 28, 2025
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
By Kurt Lozano
Monster Hunter Wilds will be the latest mainline entry in Capcom’s classic Monster Hunter series, following up on the overwhelming success of 2018’s Monster Hunter World and 2021’s Monster Hunter Rise. Marking the beginning of the sixth generation of Monster Hunter games, Monster Hunter Wilds is looking like the series’ biggest game yet.
And when I say bigger, I mean it literally. Monster Hunter Wilds will let players – taking on the role of the titular Monster Hunter – step foot into a new realm called the Forbidden Lands, which will feature a seamless open world teeming with rich ecosystems to explore and mysterious new monsters to hunt. While Capcom has revealed very few returning monsters so far, the new entries in the series’ bestiary such as Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Lala Barina, and Arkveld, are already looking like some of Monster Hunter’s best-designed creatures to date.
Of course, these monsters are more than just biological marvels to gawk at. Players will have to hunt them as the aptly named Hunters. Monster Hunter Wilds sees the return of the series’ 14 iconic weapon types with new and improved attacks and combos. The upcoming title also adds two new mechanics in the Focus Mode and Wound systems to make the players’ titanic battles with monsters more dynamic and exciting. And to facilitate the exploration of this new frontier, players will also have the ability to ride the new Seikret mount and create Pop-up Camps while out in the field.
The gameplay loop for the Monster Hunter series has always been very simple yet rewarding: hunt a monster, use its parts to create stronger weapons and armor, use your improved gear to hunt stronger monsters, then repeat until you realise that you’ve been playing from sunup to sundown. Monster Hunter Wilds will be making improvements to the core Monster Hunter experience, of course, but will also offer more depth compared to previous titles in terms of its main narrative and environmental storytelling. If what Capcom has shown so far is anything to go by, Hunters may just find themselves too immersed in the game’s vibrant world, to the point that they forget they actually have to hunt down that big dinosaur-looking creature over yonder that’s just peacefully living its life. I know I will.
GTA 6
Release date: TBA 2025
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
By Timothy Raj Augustin
The game that needs no introduction. Rockstar Games’ hilariously long-awaited open-world game Grand Theft Auto 6 has been a long time coming. The company’s latest release, Red Dead Redemption 2, arrived in 2018 - a long five years after Grand Theft Auto 5. By the time GTA 6 comes out however, fans will have waited 12 whole years to play the open-world sequel.
The road to its release has been eventful. Rockstar was hacked by a group that unceremoniously dumped almost 100 different gameplay clips from early prototypes of GTA 6 online, leading to the hacker’s arrest and the company’s acknowledgement that the footage was real. Suddenly unable to work in secret, Rockstar formally revealed the game in a jam-packed trailer back in 2022 - only to go radio silent for the two years that followed.
GTA 6 is supposedly coming out in 2025, if its reveal trailer is to be believed. When it does, it’s going to be the only thing anyone cares about. That’s a fact.
Little Nightmares III
Release date: TBA 2025
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
By Arianne Blanco
Announced by Bandai Namco in August of last year, Little Nightmares III is the upcoming standalone sequel to prior titles within the Little Nightmares series. This time, the story follows two new protagonists: Low and Alone, two children who navigate through The Nowhere to escape from a sinister looming threat.
Similar to Little Nightmares I and II, the player will explore a 3D platforming world full of puzzles and mysteries to solve. However, unlike its predecessors, Little Nightmares III will allow players to play solo alongside an AI, or with a friend through online co-op. Low and Alone will feature different mechanics and playstyles, adding replayability if you opt to choose one before the other.
The Little Nightmares series boasts rich and immersive stories set within a surreal and terrifying reality that isn’t all as it seems. If you’ve played through the first two games, you’d know how chilling its enemy encounters can be. Taking on the roles of its child protagonists thrusts you in a setting that more often than not leaves you feeling like you've bitten off more than you could chew. Though these factors may deter those faint of heart, Little Nightmares III will surely bring you back to the days in your childhood, where the unknown is keen on scaring the living daylights out of you. Are you brave enough?
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Release date: February 4, 2025
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Windows
By Tommy Makmur
A sequel to 2018's Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 continues the story of Henry of Skalidz, son of Martin the Blacksmith, on his journey to Trosky to meet Otto the Third of Bergau. In the process, he also has to recover his father’s sword from one of Sigismund’s noblemen, Istvan Toth.
Like its predecessor, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is an open-world game - though its map is twice the size of its previous game. Kingdom Come: Deliverance featured one connected world located in the region between Sasau and Rattay, the sequel would have two freely explorable areas: one in the Bohemian Paradise and the other in the city of Kutná Hora (or, in this game, Kuttenberg).
And just like Kingdom Come: Deliverance, You are given free rein on developing Henry of Skalitz, whether it's by fighting like a soldier, stealing like a thief, or playing instruments like a bard. If the developer took the same route as the previous game, you also need to look after yourself, such as by eating, bathing, or cleaning your clothes of blood from the battlefield.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a love letter to history nerds, particularly during the reign of Wenceslaus IV and the rise of Sigismund of Luxembourg. The predecessor successfully captured the essence of the life of a man in middle age, and the sequel also looks promising.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII
Release date: February 12, 2025
Platforms: Windows, MacOS, Linux
By Jay Chan
If you picked up Sid Meier’s Civilization VI during the lockdown of COVID-19, and found yourself spending countless hours in the game trying to achieve culture victory with rock bands, get ready for one more turn next year with the new Civilization VII.
As the number VII indicates, this is the seventh iteration of the Civilization game franchise, which first started all the way back in 1991. Throughout the years, the core of the Civilization franchise has remained the same: you control a civilization through history, and you get to explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate (as with all games in the 4X genre).
However, Civilization VII now gives players the possibility of starting out as one civilization, before changing to another one as they progress through the three main ages of the game. This is a bold and somewhat controversial move, considering it is quite the shift from previous iterations where you remain as one civilization until you win or lose the game.
The new three ages system split into the Antiquity Age, Exploration Age, and Modern Age, is also intriguing. The early, middle, and late game are now clearly demarcated, and each Age comes with its own events and unique gameplay mechanics. These ultimately end in a crisis, where players have to make hard decisions with Crisis Cards before moving onto the next age.
These new features are quite the departure from the standard fare we expect from the Civilization series, and I am very interested to know how these changes will affect the gameplay which we have all come to adore. If you are a fan of 4X games, this is definitely a game you should be checking out in 2025!
Hyper Light Breaker
Release Date: January 15, 2025
Platforms: Windows
By Anna Bernardo
A prequel to Heart Machine’s critically acclaimed indie classic Hyper Light Drifter, Hyper Light Breaker is coming out on early access in January. Although it’s a new instalment in the Hyper Light series, this upcoming game takes a different direction from its predecessor with its co-op open-world gameplay. It explores this world in a more expansive 3D art style, while still retaining the distinct visual aesthetic that fans know and love.
The game immerses players in the Overgrowth decades before the events of Hyper Light Drifter, a sprawling, ever-changing realm full of procedurally-generated biomes, challenging enemies, and untold secrets. As Breakers, players will take on the role of elite warriors tasked with defeating the enigmatic Crowns and their leader, the Abyss King, while uncovering the mysteries of a shattered civilisation.
The game can be played solo or with friends, and the most interesting part of this new instalment is the rogue-lite aspect—so each run will be unique from the previous runs, offering endless replayability. Hyper Light Breaker promises an exhilarating and unpredictable journey, allowing players to carve their own path through a world filled with secrets and dangers.
